Recyclingby youthstartstodayMaterials can be dropped offat Hy-VeeBy FRITZ BUSCH Journal Staff Writer NEW ULM -- A hands-on, youth benefit recycling program begins today with a 3:30 p.m. ribbon cutting event at the Hy-Vee Food Store parking lot. The New Ulm High School Band will join the New Ulm Area Youth Council, Waste Management and Hy-Vee at the event, which takes place on America Recycles Day. The goal of the "learn-and- earn" program is to increase community recycling awareness, participation and to provide youth leadership and service-learning opportunities to youth organizations in the community. The recycling collection box will be used to collect mixed paper around the clock. Items that may be dropped off include newspapers and inserts, computer and colored paper, telephone books, magazines and catalogs, hard and soft cover books, construction paper and coloring books, "junk" mail and envelopes with plastic windows, file folders, greeting cards and wrapping paper, boxboard for cereal, cake and cracker boxes and pop and beverage cartons. Plastic bags should not be used. Waste Management will donate $15 per ton for every ton of mixed paper collected at the collection box to the Youth Recycling Green Team. The New Ulm Area Youth Council, which co-sponsored the project, will select participating green teams via an application process. For more information or an application, call Heidi Bendix, New Ulm Area Youth Council Coordinator at 354-8632 or Bill Miller, Waste Management Site Manager at 354-3423. Nearly two months ago, Brown County residents recycled more than 17,000 pounds of electronics at an E-Cycling collection event at Waste Management on Minnecon Drive in New Ulm. More than 160 residents, schools and businesses recycled computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, TVs and VCRs on Sept. 18. The event was sponsored by Brown county Recycling, New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce, and Waste Management. For those that missed the E-Cycling Collection Day, they may recycle old electronics at the Waste Management Office, 16 Minnecon Drive, during regular business hours, Monday through Friday. For more information including recycling fees, call Waste Management at 354-3423.
