Board looks to add experienced memberBy TONY ZIEBOL Journal Staff Writer SPRINGFIELD -- Meeting for the first time since chairman Mike Kuelbs died of a heart attack, members of the Springfield Public School Board discussed Monday how to fill his place. Kuelbs, 50, who died Nov. 8, had just completed his first year of a four-year term. He had been on the board since 1989. The board decided to look for a past board member who would be willing to fill in on an interim basis because they wanted someone with experience. After approval by the board, this person would then serve one year until a new member is elected next November. Superintendent Luther Heller said the board has no choice but to find another member. "It has to be filled," he said. Board member Dennis Potter will take on Kuelb's duties as chairman. Before Monday's meeting, those in attendance, under Potter's request, held a moment of silence for Kuelbs. "We could all call him friend and he will be missed," Potter said. The school board had cancelled the Nov. 8 scheduled meeting due to Kuelbs' death, rescheduling the meeting a week later. Also at Monday's meeting, Heller informed the board that parts of the school roof are in need of repair, including the portion over the science room. A portion of the repair work will be done this year by Laraway Roofing Inc. of New Ulm after the school accepted its $2,000 bid. Other improvements are expected to be made in the next "two to five" years, Heller said. Because all the bleachers owned by the school didn't pass an inspection and meet new standards, some of them must be replaced and others improved. Metal bleachers in the gym need to be completely replaced at a cost of $10 per seat or $100,000, $80,000 of which can be paid through the health and safety levy.
