SLEEPY EYE -- Saturday evening was a special evening for youngsters and adults who took part in the 2000 Brown County 4-H Awards Social, at the Brown County REA building on the outskirts of Sleepy Eye.

Youth and adults were recognized for their achievements and participation in 4-H activities and programs throughout the year.

"It (the Awards Social) went extremely well," said Brown County Extension Educator Katie Rasmussen. "Our numbers are up again we moved the social to the REA building this year. We had over 125 people who came tonight."

Rasmussen said that 4-H programs and activities were a huge success.

"This year over 90 kids went up to the State Fair," she said. "We did some exciting new projects, like Arts-In and day camps like the Environmental Day Camp and the Fishing Clinic."

The Fishing Clinic and the Environmental Day Camp were open to anyone, and children who were not members of 4-H expressed interest in these activities, Rasmussen said.

Rasmussen also said it has been good to see so many youngsters interested in being Brown County Ambassadors for 2001. An ambassador is a teen 4-H member who serves as a role model for younger children through project talks and demonstrations.

"This year we have 27 kids signed up to be Ambassadors," said Rasmussen. "It's a good experience for them to be in charge."

The youth who showed exceptional leadership skills and work in their community received the Minnesota Key Award, Song of the American Revolution R.O.T.C. Citizenship Award, and the Danforth "I Dare You" Award.

Jensen Motors of New Ulm was recognized as the Outstanding Business Friend, Lois Fischer of Sleepy Eye received the 4-H Service Friend Award and John Schroeder of Courtland received the Outstanding Dairy Friend.

"One of the greatest contributions from Jensen Motors was the numerous trophies at the Brown County Fair," said MC Jake Sturm, of Watonwan County. Each club nominates a business friend and individuals they feel worthy of receiving the various awards and then an advisory board votes on the nominations.

"We really thank Jensen Motors and the other businesses in the community who support the 4-H program,"said Rasmussen. "We ask for donations and they've (Jensen Motors) always been very generous contributors."

Lois Fischer has served 4-H for approximately 32 years in the Stark Happy Hustlers Club.

Fischer was a 4-H member herself in 1947-48 in Sigel Township and then became active again when she and her husband Luverne were raising their nine children. Each of the children participated in the Stark Happy Hustler Club.

"I appreciate the award," said Lois Fischer, "I just like the many ways kids can participate in 4-H things-demonstrations, clothing, Arts-In, and all of the trips they can take. I admire what the 4-H programs offer to youngsters."
