Luneburg, Zangl headed to nationals

NEW ULM -- Two New Ulm High School wrestlers will help represent Minnesota at the 2000 Nation High-School Seniors Wrestling Championship Tournament to be held March 24-26 at the A.J. Palumbo Center on the campus of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Josh Luneburg, this year's state runner-up at 112 pounds, will be wrestling at 103 pounds for the nationals, and 119-pound fourth-place finisher Peter Zangl will be wrestling at 112.

There is a three-pound weight allowance for each class at nationals, which means Luneburg can weight 106 pounds and Zangl 115. New Ulm assistant coach Dan Kurth will also be attending.

To be eligible to wrestle at nationals, wrestlers must be high school seniors who have placed first or second in the state tournament sometime during their careers. Luneburg became eligible this year with his runner-up finish at 112, and Zangl has placed first in 1998 at 103 pounds and second in 1999 at 112. The top eight places in each weight class will be officially declared High School Senior All-Americans.

Last year, 794 wrestlers representing 48 states competed at the NHSSWC. Team Minnesota traveled to Pittsburgh with 67 people, 32 of which were wrestlers. Minnesota won the national title in 1998.

This tournament affords selected wrestlers the best competition and the best chance to be seen by top college coaches throughout the country.

Weigh-ins for the tournament will be Thursday, March 23, with preliminaries starting Friday, March 24. Wrestling will continue throughout the weekend, with finals on Sunday, March 26.
