MANKATO -- By all accounts, it was a good start to the season.

The New Ulm boys and girls track teams competed in the St. Peter Invitational at MSU-Mankato Fieldhouse Monday, walking away with five first-place finishers -- three boys and two girls.

Team scores were not kept.

"We have a lot of new kids out, so we weren't sure what to expect," Eagle boys coach Jim Pickus said. "We definitely saw some good things, and also saw some things we're going to have to work on."

Girls coach Jason Mortenson agreed.

"We saw some good things, which was nice to see considering that we were indoors," he said. "We had seven or eight kids gone because of spring break, so we were a little short-handed tonight, but all in all it was a good night for us."

On the boys side, Mike Meyer started where he left off last season, taking first in the triple jump (40 feet) and second in the long jump (19 feet). Other winners for New Ulm included Tanner Miest in the 55-meter intermediate hurdles (9.0 seconds), and Chad Walden in the 800 (2:10.8).

"Chad improved by seven seconds off that," Pickus said. "Last year at this meet he ran a 2:17, so he has really improved. Tanner is just a freshman, so he has some things to learn, but the talent is definitely there. We have a lot of talent to work with, and plus Mike hit 40 feet in the triple ... great job."

On the girls side, the two winners for the Eagles were Joni Krapf in the shot put (35 feet, 8 inches) and Julie Petersen in the triple jump (32 feet, 4 inches).

"I think we're defintely going to be tough in the field events, as well as the middle distances," Mortenson said.

The girls had a lone second-place finisher -- Jessica Schaetzke (23.4) in the 160 -- and a third in Tamara Wellmann's shot put effort (34 feet, 7 inches). Fourth-place finishes went to Petersen in the 55 high hurdles (9.9), Christine Otis in the 55 (8.4), the 640 relay team (1:42.4), and Shannon Zamzow in the 400.

Ashley Hauge took fifth in the 1,600 (6:22.3), and the medley relay team finished sixth (5:17.4).

Back to the boys side, where third-place finishes went to Jordan Budenski in the 1,600 (5:01.1) and the 640 relay team (1:23.4).

"Jordan didn't run his best race, either," Pickus said. "He'll improve from there."

Fourth-place finishes went to Ferdinand Agbehadu and Tom Bergstrom (tie) in the 55 (7.3), the medley relay team (4:14.2), Josh Zupfer and Josh Jacobs (tie) in the 400 (1:00.6), and Scott Krzmarzick in the 160 (20.1). Fifths went to Miest in the 55 high hurdles (9.9) and Brian Meier in the 160 (20.5), and sixths went to Kory Andersen in the shot put (41 feet, 3 1/2 inches), Kyle Schwartz in the 1600 (5:06.1), and Aaron Bowem in the 800 (2:25.8).

The Eagles now have off until April 4 when they travel to compete outdoors at Grove City.

"This is going to be an exciting year, I think," Pickus said. "We're just getting a feel for it right now, but these kids should feel good about tonight."
