Knights win one, tie one at Macalester

ST. PAUL -- Boosted by solid pitching from Sarah Scharf, the Martin Luther Knights won the first game of a nonconference doubleheader 2-1 over Macalester in women's softball Wednesday. MLC and Macalester were tied at 4 after seven innings in the second game when the game was called because of darkness.

Scharf (2-3) went the distance in the first game to pick up the win. The sophomore surrendered 1 run on eight hits, striking out three and walking one.

Jackie Chavez took the loss for Macalester. Chavez allowed two runs on four hits, striking out three and walking three.

Senior Jen Rainey went 1-for-2 with a double to lead MLC (3-9-1) at the plate. Kelly Gawrisch went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Two other Knights -- Gena Schawrtz and Jenny Nommensen -- each collected one hit. Scharf also drove in a run.

In the second game, Carla LaBair (0-1) went the distance without a decision. The junior allowed four runs on nine hits.

Nommensen led MLC offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. LaBair went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Schwartz was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and stole three bases.

"I'm pleased with the way the gals played," MLC coach Barb Leopold said. "If one of the girls was in a slump, one of the other girls stepped it up and that's what teamwork is all about."

MLC will host Sioux Falls in its home opener today at 3:30 p.m.
