Vetter ready tolead Cathedral boysGirls also enter season with sense of optimismas number increases from last year's squadBy SETH KOCK Journal Sports Writer NEW ULM -- The Cathedral boys golf team goes into this upcoming season with plenty of optimism and with good reason. The Greyhounds are coming off a super year last season, finishing second in the conference with a 13-4 record. The Greyhounds also return two of their top golfers from last year. Mike Vetter, who was the number two golfer on the team last year consistently shoots in the low forties and sometimes drops into the thirties. Vetter will take over the number one spot left by Luke Schmitz from last year. Greyhound boys coach John Miheve calls Vetter "a good high school golfer." "I just hope to excel this year," says Vetter, a senior. "Hopefully I can get a couple birdies." Vetter will be accompanied by senior Tim Smith who was the fifth golfer for Cathedral last year. Smith has an average in the mid forties. Brady Goldan also returns from last year's team to round out what will probably be the Greyhounds' top three golfers. Junior Tim Goldan, sophomores Dan Vetter and Matt Hooper, and Jacob Hilleshene and Pat Bauer will battle it out for the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots on the team. Cathedral Girls The word for the girls team is excitement. The girls have a new coach and an almost entirely new team. The top returner is junior Gusty Cordes. "I am excited and kind of nervous because we have a young team." says Cordes. Coach Kayla Berg shares Cordes's sentiments. "I am pretty optimistic" she says, "I have seen improvement, these girls are determined, even down to buying new golf clubs. They have lots of enthusiasm." Last year, the girls had six golfers on the team and they have grown to seven this year. The Greyhounds may lack competive experience due to the fact that they only had four matches last year. Because of the inexperience, the girls may be nervous when they step on the course. Led by Cordes, Cathedral also has freshmen Molly Bock, Emily Goldan, and Jackie Hoffman. Eighth graders Abby Bernek, Melissa Lynn, and Jessie Miller round out the rest of the team. "I am excited to see how the season starts and ends." says Berg. The Greyhounds play their home matches at the beautiful New Ulm Country Club and start their season on Tuesday against Springfield, who beat Cathedral last year for the Tomahawk Conference title on the boys side.
