Knights, UW-Stout split doubleheader

NEW ULM -- On a day made for errors, Martin Luther and Wisconsin-Stout split a doubleheader in nonconference baseball Monday at MLC Field. Wisconsin-Stout took the first game 8-7 and MLC won the second game 9-8 in eight innings.

In the two games, the teams combined for 20 errors.

The Knights (5-4) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the second game into extra innings, getting a two-run homer from Craig Breinling. MLC then scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth after Wisconsin-Stout scored a lone run in the visitor's half of the eighth.

MLC got behind 2-1 after the first and Wisconsin-Stout upped the margin to 5-1 with a three-run third. UWS then picked up a pair of runs in the fifth to run its advantage to 7-2 before MLC picked up a couple of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Chris Rathje got the win for the Knights. Rathje allowed five earned runs on eight hits in going the distance. He struck out seven and walked two.

Nate Berg led the Knights at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Breinling was 2-for-5 with a double in addition to his home run and two RBI.

Steve Vasold was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI and Mike Kuschel also was 2-for-4. Kuschel had a pair of doubles and an RBI.

MLC committed seven errors in the second game and UWS recorded five.

In the first game, UWS used a five-run fifth to hold off the Knights. UWS held a 6-1 lead before the Knights answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and then came up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Seth Meyer got the win for UWS, working seven innings. He yielded five earned runs on eight hits, striking out six and walking two.

Jake Briney took the loss for MLC. Briney surrendered five earned runs on nine hits in seven innings of work. Briney struck out four and walked two.

Kuschel and John Martin each went 2-for-4 for the Knights. Kuschel had two RBI.

Berg went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI for MLC.

MLC will travel to St. Bonifacius to take on Crown in a UMAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.
