All-Journal Girls Basketball Team 2004Andrea Fennern, Wabasso, sophomore Selected to the first all-state tournament team and Tomahawk All-Conference team this year, Fennern averaged 14.1 ppg as well as 4.3 apg. She also had 3.1 apg and 2.3 rpg. From her start in eighth grade, she already has accumulated 1,042 points, 370 assists, 225 rebounds and 242 steals. Leah Kern, St. James, senior Kern shot 55 percent from the field and 22 percent from 3-point range for the Saints, averaging 13.4 ppg. She also grabbed 7.2 rpg and had 2.1 spg and 1.6 apg. Nikki Fischer, Cathedral, senior Fischer set a school record of averaging six steals per game and a game-high 11 steals. She also shot 60 percent from the free throw line, 38 percent from the field and 32 percent from beyond the arc. Fischer scored 275 points (11.5 ppg), averaged 3 apg, 4 rpg and 6 spg, and she was named All-Tomahawk Conference. Katie Gewerth, Cedar Mountain, junior This year, Gewerth averaged 11.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 3.0 apg and 4.0 spg. In her career, she has accumulated 723 points, 329 rebounds, 157 assists and 164 steals. This year, she was chosen All-Tomahawk Conference. "[Katie was] an important part of our postseason run to the section championship," coach Ken Thiesen said. "[She is an] extremely hard worker who puts as much effort into defense as she does into offense." Alisha Kruggel, GFW, senior The three-year starter was third on the team in scoring with 11.4 ppg, led in steals with 104, and assists with 110. She ends her career fourth in GFW history with 890 points, first in steals with 282 and third with 257 assists. She is three-time All-Conference pick. "She was the point guard on this team and the engine that drove it," coach Becky Busse said. "She is the reason everyone else could score." Leah Ashburn, BLH, sophomore Leah Ashburn holds the BLH record for rebounds at 459, this year grabbing 9 rpg. Counted on to shoot from all over the floor, Leah Ashburn scored 440 points (17 ppg). She also handed out 1.1 apg and had 2.2 spg. In her second year of varsity ball, she has accumulated 784 points, 459 rebounds, 52 assists and 99 steals. "Leah is a tremendous player on both ends of the floor," said coach Josh Tjosaas. "She will be the leader of our team for the next two years." Ashley Vorwerk, GFW, senior The three-year starter led the team in scoring this year with 300 (15.3 ppg), had 80 steals and dished out 68 assists. She had a game-high 32 points for a school record. Vorwerk also shot 80 percent from the freethrow line. She is GFW's fifth-leading scorer with 826, had 403 rebounds, 151 steals and 127 assists. She was a two-time Tomahawk All-Conference pick. Molly Mathiowetz, St. Mary's, freshman Mathiowetz scored 375 points (14.4 ppg) and 237 rebounds (9.1 rpg). She also had 71 steals, 47 assists and 42 blocks this year. "Molly had a great year for us," coach Bruce Woitas said. "Molly will be a fun player to watch over the next three years." Ashley Busch, GFW, senior Busch scored her 1,000th career point this year, set the school scoring record with 1,090 points, the school's rebound record at 594 and is third in steals with 195. This year, she was second on the team in scoring with 12.5 ppg. She also had 194 rebounds and 62 steals. She was Tomahawk All-Conference and was honorable mention two years. "Ashley is a strong forward and the heart of our team," coach Becky Busse said. "She was an inspirational leader ... and [the team's] give-to girl when we needed her." Klarissa Swenson, Nicollet, junior Swenson led the Raiders in rebounding, pulling down 7.3 rpg and scoring 12.4 ppg. She was in the top five for scoring and rebounding in the Valley Conference. She also had 33 steals and 23 assists. Swenson is a two-time Valley All-Conference pick. Kim Weedman, Springfield, senior Shooting 50 percent from the field, 27 percent from beyond the arc and 69 percent from the line, Weedman led the Tigers in scoring. She scored 300 points (12.5 ppg) and 107 rebounds (4.5 rpg), had 22 steals and assists. In the postseason, she averaged 15 points and six rebounds. She was voted Tomahawk All-Conference and academic all-conference and all-state. She ends her career with 343 points and 139 rebounds. Charlotte McMullen, Sleepy Eye, junior During the season, McMullen averaged 11 ppg, 8.5 rpg, two assists and two steals. In the playoffs, McMullen averaged 12.5 ppg. Ashley Prokosch, Wabasso, senior The leading rebounder in Wabasso history grabbed 8.5 rpg this year to total 804 career rebounds. She also scored 10.5 ppg to get to 1,057 career points. Prokosch had 1.5 apg and 2.0 spg as well. She was selected to the all-state tournament team and is a two-time Tomahawk All-Conference selection. Kelsy Black, MVL, senior Black had 261 points this season, 9.7 ppg and 223 rebounds (8.3 rpg) to lead the Chargers, along with 62 steals (2.3 spg) 29 assists (1.1 apg). Her 80 percent free throw shooting led the team and led the Tomahawk Conference. For her career, Black had 440 points (8.0 ppg) and 380 rebounds (6.9 rpg), 109 steals (2.0 spg) and 61 assists (1.1 apg). Unanimous All-Conference pick. "[Black is a] very strong post player, an awesome rebounder and runs the floor well for a post," coach Dave Biedenbender said.
