Steinbach, Raabe cleared to play for 'K'

NEW ULM -- They say that you can never go home again.

For two former New Ulm baseball players, however, that statement is not true. Both Terry Steinbach and Brian Raabe will be playing baseball this summer at Johnson Park.

Steinbach, who spent 1997-99 with the Twins after a long career and with Oakland A's, and Raabe, who played with Minnesota, Seattle, Colorado and New York, have been cleared to play with the New Ulm Kaiserhoff this summer.

Both said that it will be a one-year deal.

"This is some way that I can give back something to New Ulm," said Raabe, who lives in Forest Lake and is a vice-president with the Lino Lakes State Bank. "I don't know how many of the games that I will be able to attend (being three hours away). I know that they have a large schedule (28 games), and I will be able to come down to New Ulm for Heritagefest and play some baseball. Playing once more in New Ulm is a way, as both Terry and I said, is a way to give back to New Ulm for what they have done for us. The state tournament is close to town (Sleepy Eye and Fairfax); I am competitive by nature so that is fun and I want to have fun."

"It is a situation that potentially I kind use to stay in shape a little bit in case the Olympic baseball thing pans out," said Steinbach. "But I started in New Ulm and I want to play one more year for New Ulm again."

Steinbach said that the first time that he steps on the field at Johnson Park, "will be kind of weird. I know that it will bring back some good memories. I will try and balance out the playing with my kids' schedules that they have this summer and with the distance that we travel, and make it work that way."
