Brewers down Leavenworth

NEW ULM -- The New Ulm Brewers broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and added two runs in the seventh to clip Leavenworth 7-1 Sunday afternoon in the 2002 Tomahawk East League opener.

Tony Burt picked up the win for New Ulm in relief of starter Jeremy Wieland, who went the first five innings and allowed only one run while striking out seven.

Dan Scwartz took the pitching loss for Leavenworth, also in relief. He permitted three runs.

Chris Peters and Todd Hoffmann led the nine-hit Brewer attack with two hits including RBI doubles by both players.

Leon Hillesheim doubled for Leavenworth.

The Brewers, who play at St. James next Sunday in a 2 p.m. Tomahawk East League contest, scored a single run in the bottom of the second inning thanks to three consecutive errors by the Leavenworth defense after two outs.

Scott O'Brien's ground ball to Oriole second baseman Tim Schwartz handcuffed him for the first error of the inning. O'Brien swiped second and went to third when Corey Schaefer's ground ball was misplayed by shortstop Adam Armbruster, putting Brewer runners on first and third.

Schwartz' throwing error to first on a Tony Burt ground ball allowed O'Brien to score for a 1-0 lead.

Leavenworth tied the game with its only run of the contest in the fifth on a two-out Leon Hillseheim double and an RBI single by Steve Eckstein.

New Ulm scored three runs in the sixth inning on a lead-off single by Chris Peters and a walk to Todd Hoffmann. O'Brien followed by beating out a bunt single to third. Peters scored by beating the throw home on the same play.Corey Schaefer's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third before Schwartz, who had relieved starter Randy Armbruster in the fourth, walked Tony Burt to load the bases.Hoffmann scored on a fielder's choice before Burt scored on a wild pitch.

Hoffmann's double to center in the seventh brought in Scott Schaefer who beat out an infield single to deep short earlier in the inning. Hoffmann scored the second run of the inning on Corey Schaefer's base hit.

The Brewers added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a Peters' double to center field.
