Sunday to mark start of amateur season

By Jim Bastian

NEW ULM -- The 2000 amateur baseball season will begin Sunday, and in New Ulm the Brewers will host Leavenworth at Johnson Park with a 2 p.m. start.

Last season, there were many promotions at Brewers and New Ulm Kaiserhoff games at Johnson Park. This season, the promotions will expand to include every amateur game at Johnson Park and also several Legion games.

Several skills competitions are planned for adults as part of the promotional schedule for Brewers games. Events planned include baseball-throwing contests and water fights.

Several events are also planned for children, including races around the bases.

Fan Appreciation Day will be July 15. Kaiserhoff will host Dundas at 7:30 p.m.

So pick up your season pass at Johnson Park and get a schedule for both the Brewers and Kaiserhoff. It's going to be a great year again at Johnson Park.

GULDEN TO ATTEND WISCONSIN-PLATTEVILLE: Shane Gulden, who placed fifth and third the last two years at 130 pounds in the Minnesota state tournament for New Ulm High will be attending Wisconsin-Platteville.

In four years, Gulden compiled a record of 126-28 with 46 pins for the Eagles.

The son of Bruce Gulden, he helped New Ulm High finish with a South Central Conference title, an SCC tournament crown and a 22-2 team record in 1999-2000.

LOCALS AT MINNESOTA STATE-MANKATO: Several local athletes are doing very well at Minnesota State-Mankato.

In softball, New Ulm Cathedral graduate Sarah Kuehn is batting .302 from her lead-off spot and has scored 23 runs. When she leads off an inning, she is hitting .338 and has been successful in seven of nine steal attempts.

In baseball, New Ulm High graduates Brady Ranweiler and Aaron Heitzman, both Kaiserhoff players, are excelling. Ranweiler is smashing the ball at a .371 clip and leads the team with nine home runs and with 42 RBI. His .733 slugging pecentage is also tops for the Mavericks.

Heitzman is 4-3 for the Mavericks and has a 3.48 ERA. In 51 2-3 innings, he has struck out 47. He has a no-hitter to his credit this year.

EAGLES ON ROLL:When New Ulm High lost its first two baseball games at the start of the season, many people questioned how good this team would be.

But since those two losses, the Eagles have run off eight straight wins. Some people will say that these wins were against lesser teams in the South Central Conference. But they should note that two of those wins were against non-conference teams Edina and Mankato East.

The Eagles hope to make it nine straight wins today, and improve to 7-0 in the conference, when they host St. James at 5 p.m.

HOUNDS-CHARGERS TO FOLLOW: Today is supposed to be nice weather-wise, so why not take the family to the doubleheader tonight at Johnson Park. After the Eagles and Saints meet at 5 p.m., Cathedral and Minnesota Valley Lutheran will play at 8 p.m.

It will be a big game standings-wise for both teams. Cathedral enters at 4-4 while MVL is 4-5.

MVL is a team that is improving under coach Craig Morgan. The days of 10-run rule wins over MVL are gone.

Cathedral needs to get on track after a split with Buffalo Lake-Hector. One of the players that has really impressed me this year is junior shortstop Joey Schugel. Sure, he made an error in the BLH game, but more often than not, he will make the plays. He is a player with a ton of potential and loves the game of baseball.

UMPIRE MEETING: There will be a meeting for anyone interested in umpiring for New Ulm Junior Baseball at 6 p.m. Sunday at the North Park shelter. If you are interested, but cannot make the meeting, contact Paul Yageraat (507) 354-1974.
