Eagle girls continue to improve

NEW ULM -- The New Ulm girls golf team approached the year as a rebuilding one, hoping to steal a win or two and build towards a prominent future.

The confidence is already showing as the Eagles shot their second best score of the year and defeated St. Peter 212-270 in South Central Conference girls golf action Monday at the New Ulm Country Club.

Randi Wise shared co-medalist honors for the second time this season as she shot a 49. She tied with St. Peter's Brianna Olson.

"Being co-medalist is a good feeling," Wise said. "I definitely could have had a better score. It was spongy for most part."

New Ulm girls coach Todd McKeeth was also pleased with Wise's day and even thought she could have done much better.

"She felt like she played real well," McKeeth said. "She could of scored a little better than that. She said she missed four par putts which would have helped her score considerably. She's pretty happy staying in the 40s."

The Eagles improved to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the SCC.

Wise struggled on the first hole, shooting a 3-over-par seven. However, she hit only two hazards as she regrouped to lead the Eagles.

"I didn't get a par all day, which I was upset with," Wise said. "I hit a couple of sand traps, which were really the only hazards I hit."

Meghan Bode shot a 50 and Morgan Hirth shot a 53 for the Eagles. Kayla Nesvold shot a 60 for the final score of 212.

"Meghan was fairly disappointed in her score," McKeeth said. "She thought she played better than 50. I think for the most part, she hit the ball fairly well. She said her putting wasn't very good today. But for being one stroke out of tying for medalist, I think that was pretty good too."

After Olson's score of 49, Kelly Healy shot a 68 for the Saints and Emma Ziebarth shot a 76. Jenny Grabow rounded out St. Peter's scoring with a 77.

"I'm real happy with how we're doing," McKeeth said. "I'm seeing some progress and this is what we're kind of expecting for this year. We want to look at each player and see some improvement throughout the year."

On the boys side, freshman Jimmy Fromm earned medalist honors for the first time this season as he shot a 76 to lead the Eagles (2-7, 2-2) to a 337-342 win over the Saints.

"I'm very pleased with a 76 from Jimmy, but he's been very consistent all year long," boy's coach Randy Ogren said. "He's had maybe one or two blowouts, but for the most part he's been consistent. So I'm happy with that, and knowing that he's a freshman and will be back for another three years is a good feeling to have, too."

Jon Herzog was one off Fromm's pace as he shot a 77. Brian Heitzman shot a 90 and Ian Sletta shot a 94 for the Eagles.

"Jon expects to do better than that and he is capable of that," Ogren said. "He only came off the front side 1-over, and he had a little trouble on the back. But he's got a very very good game and he can recover."

For St. Peter, Jason Roggow led the way with an 82. Graham Estenson shot an 83 and Travis Roggow shot an 88. Matt Vetter carded an 89 for the Saints.

Ogren feels the team is close now to getting to where it wants to be and will continue to see improvement.

"If we go to the conference meet and Jon and Jim continue to shoot them scores if not less, and I'd like a couple of guys down in the 80s, [I think we] will be respectable, and I think that's what this team needs to have right now.

Both teams travel to Waseca Thursday for another conference meet.
