Rabbits run past MVL

NEW ULM -- Things went from bad to worse for the Chargers as Wabasso shut out Minnesota Valley Lutheran 8-0 and 9-0 in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday.

Rabbit Amanda Frank went the distance from the mound in the first game, allowing only four hits, walking two, and striking out two.

Jenny Burt took the loss for the Chargers, giving up 10 hits in the first game, walking three, hitting two players, and striking out two.

Wabasso's big inning came in the fourth. The Chargers' defense had kept the Rabbits to only a 1-0 advantage before Frank got on base with a single. Holly Altermatt and Julie Rohlik were thrown out at first, but advanced Frank to third. A Charger throwing error brought Frank home and put Alissa Ricketts on base. Ricketts then stole second and another MVL error put Jessica VanLoy on second and helped Ricketts cross the plate. Two more stolen bases and a single by Casey Price brought VanLoy home, and put Wabasso up 4-0 at the end of the fourth.

Annie Moore and Angela Schumacher crossed the plate in the fifth after both hitting singles. Frank and Rohlik hit doubles and rounded the bases in the seventh.

Wabasso had eight stolen bases in the first game.

"The girls were really running heads-up on the bases." said Wabasso coach John VanLoy.

"We had our chances in the first game", said MVL coach Kathy Radsek. "We just couldn't get the offense going."

The Chargers left the bases loaded at the close of the second inning after Robin Hoffman got to base on a walk, Hannah Gronholz hit a single to right field, and Becky Burns advanced the runners and took her base after being hit by a pitch.

Two more MVL players were stranded after the third. Kim Heldt and Hannah Enter hit singles, but the Rabbit defense kept any hope of a rally out of the Chargers reach.

"In the second game our errors killed us," said Radsek. "Our defense fell apart." MVL committed a total of 11 errors. Five were in the first inning, resulting in three Wabasso runs.

Rabbit pitcher Angela Schumacher kept MVL to only one hit, walked one, and had 10 strikeouts.

"This was Schumacher's fifth game, and she's been getting stronger." said VanLoy. "She throws with nice velocity." Schumacher struck out five consecutive batters in the second and third innings.

Burt again took the loss for the Chargers, allowing six hits, walking four and striking out one.

MVL's lone hit came from Heldt in the fourth, a single to left field.

On the bases the Rabbits were hard to catch, stealing 11 bases. Tiffany Froelich and Annie Moore led the Wabasso offense both going 2-for-4.

"As a team we're playing better defensively." said VanLoy. "It's good to see that at this time of the year. Things are starting to click as we go into the tournament next week."

Wabasso's record improves to 9-4. The Rabbits will play Thursday at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.

MVL (3-14) will take on McLeod West Thursday on the road.
