New Ulm's Otis dominates at conference meet

WASECA -- New Ulm's Mary Otis was a quadruple winner and also was the recipient of the Vern Walden Award Tuesday in the South Central Conference girls track meet.

Otis won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.12 and the 100-meter dash in 12.68. She also won the long jump with a mark of 15-feet-7 1/4 inches and she took the 300 hurdles in 47.71

Fairmont won the event with 167 points and New Ulm took second with 97 points. Waseca took third with 93.5 points and Blue Earth Area finished fourth with 83.5 points. St. James took fifth with 76 points and St. Peter took sixth with 39 points.

"We came in second overall, and Waseca beat us earlier at our home meet, so we got them back here," New Ulm girls track coach Jason Mortenson said. "As far as a team, we did outstanding. We had personal bests all over the place. Anna Evers did a nice job in the discus and Sharon Wurtzberger did well in the high [jump] and also the triple jump. Their focus was really good and they were in tune as far as one meet goes."

The Walden award goes to one boy and one girl, and the winner is the athlete who scores the most points in the meet.

"She had a very good showing," Mortenson said. "It was a very good performance and she just went out there and attacked."

Wurtzberger took second in the high jump with a mark of 4-10. She also took third in the triple jump with a leap of 32-1 1/4.

The New Ulm 4X200 relay team of Chandra Oscarson, Anna Nosek, Heather Schmitz and Wurtzberger took third in 1:57.75. The 4X100 team of Christine Otis, Katie Schmiel, Megan Oberle and Nicole Gohr took third in 54.03.

Greta Sieve took third in the 1,600 in 5:35.43 and third in the 3,200 in 12:21.37. Evers took third in the discus with with a throw of 101-4.

On the boys side, St. Peter won with 143.5 points, barely enough to edge Blue Earth Area who finished with 141 points. New Ulm took third with 103 points and St. James finished fourth with 80 points. Fairmont took fifth with 66.5 points and Waseca took sixth with 24 points.

New Ulm's Jared Budenski won the 1,600 in 4:25.59 and the 800 meter in 2:00.43. Josh Zupfer won the 400-meter dash in 51.46 and Dan Besser won the 300 hurdles in 40.59.

Jon Reywitzer won the discus with a throw of 130-2 1/2.

Zupfer took second in the 200-meter dash in 23.3 and third in the 100-meter dash in 11.25. Besser took second in the high hurdles in 15.87. The New Ulm 4X400 team of Besser, Budenski, Moses Dannen and Mike Henle took second in 3:38.

Reywitzer took third in the shot put with a throw of 44-2.

New Ulm competes in the section meet Tuesday at Mankato West.

Cedar Mountain girls win at Redwood Valley

REDWOOD FALLS -- Marshall won the A &W boys Track and Field Invitational Saturday with 175.5 points. Redwood Valley took second with 173.5 points and St. James had 126.5 points. Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop took fourth with 83 points and Pipestone Area took fifth with 47. Renville County West scored 29.5 points and Cedar Mountain scored 25 points. Wabassot took eighth with 24 points and Sleepy Eye took ninth with 18 points.

GFW's Tyler Schwecke took second in the long jump with a mark of 21-feet-1 and Tim Law took first in the triple jump with a leap of 42-1.

On the girls side, Cedar Mountain won with 189 points and Pipestone Area took second with 122.5 points. St. James took third with 96.5 points and Redwood Valley took fourth with 76 points. Marshall finished with 70 points and Wabasso took sixth with 53 points. Renville County West took seventh with 52 ponts and Sleepy Eye finished eighth with 21 points. GFW placed ninth with 17 points.

Cedar Mountain's Ashely Kokesch won the 100 meter dash in 13.07 and Katie Gewerth won the 400 in 1:00.17. Rachel Bagel took second in the 400 in 1:04.07.

Kelly Gewerth won the 800-meter run for the Cougars in 2:26.68 and teammate Jackie Serbus took second in the same event in 2:29.75.

Cedar Mountain's Nikki Schultz took first in the 1,600 meter run in 5:40.13 and Amanda Hoffback won the 3,200 in 13:06.08.

The Cougar 4x100 relay team of Dani Serbus, Rachel Engel, Linda Kanne and Kaley Phillips took second in 54.65 and the 4X200 team of Dani Serbus, Ashley Kokesch, Nikki Schultz and Libby Nolting took second in 1:54.07.

The Cougar 4X400 relay team of Sam Madsen, Jackie Serbus, Kelly Gewerth and Katie Gewerth won in 4:11.85.

Katie Newgard of Pipestone Area and Tom Ellingworth from Redwood Valley won Athlete of the Meet awards.
