Fairmont repeats one-stroke win over Eagles

ST. PETER -- New Ulm High's Tyler Hirth and Matt Wieland tied for third place with 6-over 75s, but the Fairmont Cardinals edged the Eagles 313-314 to win the South Central Conference boys golf title Friday at Shoreland Country Club. St. Peter also had a 314.

The Cardinals won the SCC title in 2001 by beating the Eagles by one shot.

In the girls tournament, New Ulm High senior Amanda Paa fired an 8-over-par 78 to win the girls individual golf title. Paa finished four shots in front of Blue Earth Area's Natalie Zitnak.

The Eagles finished third in the team standings at 381. Fairmont won with 347.

The Cardinals placed all four of their scoring players in the first six. Meghan Bishop and Cassie Roforth tied for third place with 83s. Meghan Schons shot a 90 and teammate Jenna Johnson tied for sixth with a 91.

Jon Hagedorn of Blue Earth Area won the boys individual title with an even-par round of 69. Mark Stuckey of St. Peter was second with a 73.

Hirth and Wieland each went out in 37 and shot 38 on the inward nine. Freshman Jon Herzog shot an 82 for New Ulm High and teammate Sam Schaetzke also shot an 82.

On the girls side, Paa shot 39 on each nine. Randi Wise shot a 45 on the back nine for the Eagles after going out in 54.

Shelly Stueber was one shot back of Wise with a 100 and Meghan Bode shot a 104 for the Eagles, recording a 48 on the back nine after shooting 56 on the front nine.

The New Ulm High girls will play in the Section 2-2A girls tournament in Willmar Friday. The Eagles boys will play in the Section 2-2A boys tournament at Mankato Country Club, also Friday.
