Tomahawk medalist Frazeen plays for familyBy JEN SEAVEY Journal Sports Editor SANBORN -- Buffalo Lake-Hector's Kasey Frazeen had more than enough motivation to medal with an 83 at the Tomahawk Conference meet at Farmer's Golf and Health Club Monday. Sleepy Eye St. Mary's won the meet with a team score of 395. Frazeen had 44 in the first round and on the back nine, broke 40 for the first time in her career with a 39. Right away, Frazeen called her father, Tim Frazeen, who set a tournament record of 65 at the Harvest Fest Tournament at the same course last year. "The club manager [Richard Meyers] gave me my dad's ball that had his signature on it and the date, so I think that helped a little," Kasey Frazeen said with a grin. "I wanted to play good and keep the family name." But Frazeen was also golfing for her mother, Stacey Frazeen, who was diagnosed with liver, breast and bone cancer two years ago in August. "It puts a different perspective on life; I've grown up a lot in the last couple of years," Kasey Frazeen said. "It helps me want to do things better, to make her feel better -- encourage her more." Last year, Kasey Frazeen was second at the conference meet with a 92 in her first meet of the season after sitting out because of an injured knee. "This year, I wanted to play better, because mom is sick and I'm not going to a four-year college," Frazeen said. "I'm going to Ridgewater [in Hutchinson] so I can take care of my mom -- we live 12 miles from Hutch. I'm getting my nursing degree and then hopefully transferring to a four-year school and play golf." Kasey Frazeen started out the second round one under par, then took seven on a hole, but kept parring after that. She had a strong drive on nine, put the ball close to the pin with a seven iron, putted it up, and made a two-foot putt to get her 39. Coming in second in the meet was St. Mary's Christy Schroepfer, with a 90 (48-42), and teammate Laura Huiras had 91 (47-44) for third. Shelly Langer (102) and Alissa Fischer (112) rounded out scoring for the Knights. "The 42 really helped -- I've had a 40 once, otherwise, it's the best I've had," Schroepfer said. Although she had an eight and a seven on No. 4, Schroepfer made up for it on the rest of the course. "I didn't like No. 4 -- there's a lot of trees, a dogleg, water, sand, everything. "My short game was really on today ... I made up for it," she said. "I one-putted a lot. That was nice." Coming in second as a team was BLH, with 407. Frazeen's 83 led the team, Laura Kurth had 106, Karissa Stromley had 107 and Janae Jakobitz shot 111. Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop took third place with 413. Brittany Kiecker and Roxanna Miller each shot 100, Sarah Radtke had a 101 and Kelsey Marquardt finished with 112. Tori Jones shot a 96 for fourth place as Springfield also finished fourth with 437. "My first round ... I started slipping a little," Jones said. Jones used her pitching wedge for chipping on the second round instead of her 8-iron with hopes of improving. "The second round went a lot better -- I stepped it up." Cedar Mountain was fifth with 444 and Monde Larsen won a playoff for sixth with 100; Wabasso was sixth wifh 445 with Teri Schueller getting fifth with a 97; Cathedral was seventh with 464; Sleepy Eye was eighth (522); McLeod West was ninth (534); and Minnesota Valley Lutheran had incomplete results.
