Indians, Hanska score victories in Tomahawk East actionBY JIM BASTIAN Journal Sports Writer SLEEPY EYE -- The Sleepy Eye Indians scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a 3-0 Winthrop lead, and the slugfest was on as the Indians improved to 8-2 in the Tomahawk East League with an 18-10 win over Winthrop. Bob Schmid got the win for the Indians in relief of starter Jay Krzmarzick. Schmid went the final 3 1/3 innings. Adam Bemmels, the second of three pitchers used by the Eagles (0-8) took the loss. Jadon Witt, Brian Sieve and Kip Krzmarzick each had three hits for the Indians. Sieve drove in three runs with two doubles. Kip Krzmarzick, Kelly Krzmarzick, Bob Schmid and Dustin Haala doubled for Sleepy Eye with Paul Jones and Adam Bemmels doubling for Winthrop. Paul Jones and Dan Anderson homered for the Eagles. Winthrop held a 3-0 lead going into the fourth inning on an RBI groundout in the second by Travis Evenson and Paul Jones' two-run homer in the top of the fourth. But Sleepy Eye sent 13 men to the plate to score nine times. A bases-loaded walk and a two run single by Bryce Boelter tied the game.A Brian Hertling single and a walk forced in another run. Brian Sieve's bases-loaded double made it 7-3 before doubles by Kip Krzmarzick and Schmid upped the Indian lead to 9-3. Winthrop came back with four runs in the fifth on an error, a wild pitch and two walks. Sleepy Eye scored three runs in each of the final three innings. Sieve's two-run double in the sixth was the big blow in that inning. Boelter's single, an error and Kelly Krzmarick's double scored the three runs in the seventh. Winthrop pushed three runs across in the top of the eighth on a Bemmel's RBI double and Dan Anderson's two-run homer. The Indians closed out the scoring with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Jadon Witte's RBI single and Dustin Haala''s two-run double ended the scoring in the two-hour, 45-minute marathon. WINTHROP 010-204-030=10-10-1 SLEEPY EYE 000-093-33X=18-16-3 HANSKA 9, NEW ULM BREWERS 8 NEW ULM Jon Beckius battered two home runs and drove in three runs as the Lakers (5-5) handed the Brewers (10-1) their first loss in the Tomahawk East. (The game was halted in the seventh inning Saturday night.) Josh Retka picked up the win in relief of Duane Helget for Hanska. Chris Peters, the third pitcher used by the Brewers, took the loss. Frank Forstner, Luke Jacobs and Nate Gusso each had three hits for Hanska with Duane Helget helping his own cause with two hits and three RBI. Scott Schaefer had three hits and three RBI for New Ulm. Dan O'Brien, Dan Krzmarzick, Chris Peters and Al Wurtzberger each collected two hits for the Brewers. Hanska outhit the Brewers 14-13 with the teams combining for eight errors. * In other action, Searles defeated Stark, 6-2.
