Duluth drops NU Gold 3-0By JIM BASTIAN Journal Sports Writer NEW ULM -- Carl Sievery went 2-for -3 with a double and a solo home run while driving in two runs as Duluth Lakeview handed New Ulm Gold their third straight loss in the Upper Midwest Classic by a 3-0 score. Josh Gow got the complete game win, striking out eight while allowing just one hit - that being a two-out first inning double by Brad Kraus. Dusty Farasyn took the loss for New Ulm Gold. The righthander permitted eight hits and struck out four. He walked only one. Chris Siljendahl added a double for Duluth while Dave Opack contributed two singles. "We did not give up a big inning in this game," said New Ulm coach Dave Kunz. "But we did not score any runs. If there was one thing that was a little bit of a surprise going into this (tournament) I thought that our pitching was a little suspect. I had thought that our hitting would carry us through. But our pitching was actually -- with the exception of one game -- quite decent. That is encouraging because there are a lot of younger guys who have been working on things." Duluth would score the only run that they would need in the third inning off of Farasyn on doubles by Chris Sijendahl and Carl Suevery. Meanwhile, New Ulm bats were as quiet as the weather following the two-out first inning double by Kraus. Gold could only get a runner as far as secomd base twice. In the fifth inning, Josh Thorson walked and went to second on a Tony Mielke groundout. But Gow retired Scott Knisley on a comebacker to end the threat. In the sixth, Landon Rewitzer walked and took second on Levi Stugelmeyer's sacrfice bunt. However Gow again got the final out with no damage when he coaxed Brad Kraus into an infield groundout. Duluth would add two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sievery made it 2-0 when he hammered a Farasyn offering over the fence in leftfield. Jake Maida followed with a walk and a Gow bunt single placed him at second. Dave Opack's base hit loaded the bases before Maida scored on a fielder's choice for a 3-0 lead. Gow then set down New Ulm batters in order in the seventh. New Ulm Gold will return to action on Tuesday night when they host Fairmont at Mueller Park. Omaha 3, New Ulm Gold 0 NEW ULM -- Two triples by Omaha in the third inning knocked the wind out of New Ulm as Omaha beat Gold 3-0 Sunday in Game 16 of the Upper Midwest Classic at Johnson Park. With one out in the third, Omaha's Mark Woodward hit a triple and scored on a passed ball. Then, with two outs, losing pitcher J.J. Germscheid gave up another triple to Jeremy Groen, but thanks to a play at first for the third out, Omaha got just one. Two plays in the game kept Omaha from scoring more early on. In the second, catcher Tyler Morgan threw out Erik Bird at second; Bird had walked to get on base. In the fourth with two Omaha runners on, New Ulm's Scott Knisley, Landon Rewitzer and Adam Nilson made a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning. In the seventh inning, Omaha put the game away, scoring Woodward and David Dale when Tony Martin hit a double. Omaha then turned around and allowed two Gold batters on base, but got the third out before Gold could do anything. Woodward, ninth in Omaha's lineup, went three-for-three with his triple and two runs scored.
