NEW ULM -- Tony Burt got what he deserved for his birthday, a win.

Burt pitched a complete game, the day after his 21st birthday to lead the New Ulm Brewers over Redwood Falls 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Johnson Park in Tomahawk East Baseball action.

But Burt's day didn't look so bright at the beginning of the game.

"I was struggling a lot," Burt admitted. That struggle was evident when the third batter of the game, Dave Darr, cranked a home run over the right field fence.

Redwood Falls got to Burt again, in the third inning. Brady Hagert started the inning with a single. He advanced to third base on singles by Pete Lyle and Eric Brosam. Hagert eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Burt battled out of the inning and left three runners on base. That was the start of dominance by Burt as he allowed only three singles over the final six innings.

"I got in a groove and the fielders did well," said Burt, who gave up nine hits and struck out four.

The Brewers, who host Sleepy Eye Tuesday night at Johnson Park, helped Burt through the early innings as they did an act of anything you can do, I can do better. When the Red Birds scored a run, the Brewers scored two runs in the bottom half of that inning.

Corey Schaefer and Scott O'Brien started the first inning with walks. One batter later, Phil Clennon doubled off the wall to drive in Schaefer. The ball hit the 363 feet sign and brought the sign to the ground. The clean-up hitter, Chris Peters flied out to left field to bring in O'Brien and give the Brewers a 2-1 lead.

The Brewers (17-3, 16-3) scored their third inning runs with two outs. Clennon reached base on a fielder's choice. Peters kept the inning alive with a ground ball single. Scott Schaefer drove in Clennon and courtesy runner Bruce Jacobs with a double over the center fielder's head. The double gave the Brewers the lead at 4-2.

Scott Schaefer added the icing on the cake for the Brewers and Burt with a solo home run in the eighth inning to record the final run of the game. He shared the team high in hits with Al Wurtzberger and Jeremy Wieland. They collected two hits each off losing and complete game pitcher, Casey Pack.
