NEW ULM -- Chemistry on a team is important in every sport, especially when you bake in the sun for five hours.

On Monday, the team of Kreg Kapitan, Ev Reiff, Rick Schnobrich, Rod Dietrich and Ader Wieland credited good team chemistry to their first place finish at the 2001 Veigels Kaiserhoff Classic at the New Ulm Country Club.

The champions got things going early on the day as Wieland drained a 25 foot putt for eagle on the first hole.

"That eagle on one got us going. After that we played steady, consistent golf," said Schnobrich.

That is true, if he meant they consistently scored birdies on nearly every hole. That is exactly what they did on the front nine, except for the fourth and fifth holes, where they carded pars.

The veteran team --five guys totaled 333 years of age-- kept things going on the back nine. They battled the heat and wind to score 6-under on the back and finish at 14-under, 57. After their handicap was figured they had an amazing round of 55 for the win.

Clark Cipra, Bill Drusch, Tim Schultz, Syl Mallak and Eric Dulka net score of 56.25 was good for second place. They fired an 8-under on the back nine -- tied for best nine hole score with Kapitan's team -- but were unable to keep that pace as they carded a 31 on the front nine to finish at 58.

Only finishing a half shot back of second place was the team of Dick Price, Pete Eichten, Charlie Gribble, Gary Kohn and Scott Arlandson. They played steady golf on way to a 59 (56.75) with a 29 on the front and a 30 on the back.

Bob Miller, Mark Davis, R.T. Annexstad, Tim Kohn and Pete Macho started their round on the tenth hole and recorded a 29 on the back nine but the they slipped a bit on way to a 31 on the front for a total of 60 (57.75) a fourth place finish.

Two teams shot nets scores of 58.25 but Tom Fenske, Doug Bode, Jim Kuderer, Gary Peterson and Ed Grassa won on a scorecard playoff on the ninth hole to take fifth place. Jeff Schmucker, Jeff Lindemann, Jim Schuetzle, Bob Burns and Don Abraham were on the back end of the deal as lost in the playoff for sixth place.

The seventh place team may have had too many good golfers as their handicap only gave them a quarter of a shot. Randy Herzog, Frank Whitcomb, Mark Reiff, Roger Schultz and Bob Webb gross score of 59 was the same as third place team's score but that doesn't matter because they netted 58.75.

Tom Larson, Steve Koehler, Dave Carpenter, Ray Zellar and Dan Rhoades was the final team to earn some cash. Their net score of 58.75 was good for eighth.
