Cold Spring tops Shakopee, 7-2By JIM BASTIAN Journal Sports Writer SLEEPY EYE -- When you give up eight walks and 11 hits in a game, you rarely win. Add in seven stolen bases to that brew and rare grows to impossible. Cold Spring took advantage of those three ingredients and mixed them into a 7- 2 win over Shakopee Thursday night in the first round of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament at Sleepy Eye Baseball Park. Southpaw Andy Bolsun picked up the complete-game win for the Springers (33-4). He allowed nine hits while striking out seven. Chad Kemp took the loss for Shakopee (31-17). The former Milroy pitcher, who now plays for Chaska and was drafted by Shakopee, lasted 3 1-3 innings. He was charged with six runs on five hits, fanning two and walking five. Cold Spring's first three hitters did the majority of the damage, producing two hits each from Josh Loesch, Ron Terres and Rod Schaefer. Loesch scored three runs while both Terres and Schaefer drove in two runs. Rich Rhinesmith and Gary Schleper each collected two hits with Lance Siedown belting a solo home run for Shakopee. Cold Spring used the walk, as they did all game, to jump-start its offense. Loesch coaxed a lead-off walk in the bottom of the first and stole second. Rod Schaefer was safe on a one-out single off Kemp's glove and when Kemp attempted to throw out Schaefer at first, his throw sailed by Schleper, allowing Loesch to trot home for a 1-0 lead. The Indians were denied tying the game in the top of the second. Rich Rhinesmith and Schleper singled to put runners on first and third with no outs. Charlie Smith followed with a grounder to shortstop Ron Terres, who came home with the throw to nail Rhinesmith at the plate on a close play. A walk again would spark a Springer uprising when Gabe Dahl drew a one-out walk. Bill Theis followed with a single and Loesch reached on a free pass to load the bases. A Terres' ground out plated one run before Schaefer slapped a two-run single to center for a 4-0 lead. The Indians scored a run in the fifth when Siedown delivered a solo home run to left to bring Shakopee to within 6-1. But Cold Spring matched that with a run in the sixth. Shakopee scored one run in the ninth, but also lost their second runner at home. Rhinesmith and Schleper singled. Smith followed with a double to right that scored Rhinesmith but pinchrunner Justin Kaufenberg was thrown out at home for the second out. Bulson then recorded his seventh strike out to end the game.
