New Ulm High netters pummel Cardinals REDWOOD FALLS -- Sweeping the doubles matches and capturing all but one singles match, the New Ulm High Eagles routed the Redwood Valley Cardinals 6-1 Thursday morning in girls nonconference tennis. "The match was closer than the final score," noted New Ulm High coach Pat Reedy. "It is promising to see a young team demonstrate physical and mental perseverance at the outset of the season." Four of the seven matches went to a third set and the Eagles won three of the matches. In No. 1 singles, senior Brittany Gorres outlasted the Cardinals' Kate Maland 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. Jenny Pugh won her three-setter at No. 3 singles, taking the Cardinals' Lisa Goodthunder 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, the Eagles got a three-set win from Megan VanRoekel and Liz Reedy 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. The Eagles Katie Hildebrandt cruised at No. 2 singles, routing Linda Gano 6-3, 6-0. Senior Meghan Reedy and junior Sheena Stueber coasted to a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Cardinals' Olivia Schoffmann and Amanda Malecek at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, New Ulm High's Laura McLuen and Sarah Rohde decisioned Karissa Rathmeier and Kristin Malecha 7-5, 7-5. Alecia Prins got the only win for RVHS, edging Kelsey Langholz 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. New Ulm High (1-0) will travel to the Austin tournament Saturday.
