SMSE girls win

first meet of '01

ST. JAMES -- Julia Eckstein got the 2001 cross country season started with a win Wednesday afternoon, and was one of three Sleepy Eye St. Mary's/Sleepy Eye High girls to finish among the top five, as the Knights outpaced St. James and St. Peter.

SMSE finished with 19 points -- 17 better than runner-up St. James. The St. Peter girls did not field a full team.

Eckstein covered the 4,000-meter course in 17:42. Kyla Hoffmann was fourth for SMSE in 19:00; Maria Wenner was fifth for the Knights in 19:09.

SMSE's Katie Schumacher was seventh overall in 19:17 and teammate Shelley Eckstein was eighth in 19:38.

On the boys side, St. James was the only team to field a complete squad. SMSE and St. Peter were both incomplete.

Jamie Markuson topped the Knight boys with a time of 21:03 on the 5,000-meter course. Teammate Chris Hauge was ninth in 21:07.

Ben Holkesvig was 16th in 25:04 and Billy Jarvis was 18th in 26:13 for the Knights.

SMSE is idle until Sept. 6 when they will run in the New Ulm Invitational.
