Carleton edges Martin Luther women, 5-4NEW ULM -- Carleton edged Martin Luther 5-4 in nonconference women's soccer Saturday. Carleton scored four unanswered goals before 20 minutes were gone, helped by Birungi Mutebi, who kicked the first goal at the 7:06 mark. Amy Holmes scored less than two mintues later, assisted by Mutebi. Carleton's third goal bounced off a MLC defender resulting in an own goal for Carleton. Mutebi scored Carleton's final goal of the first half, assisted by Holmes. MLC's first goal, an own goal scored off a Carleton defender, came in the 30th minute of play to cut the lead to 4-1. The Knight's dominated the second half, but still were unable to overcome Carleton's defense, racking up 23 shots on goal to Carleton's 13. Katie Mueller kicked the first goal of the second half, assisted by Tami Schmidt. Carleton's final goal was a penalty kick by Mutebi, which ultimetely decided the difference between a tie and Carleton's win. MLC went on to score twice more, the first by Andrea Stuebes on an unassisted break-away and the second by Lisa Mueller, also unassisted. MLC keeper Beth Ibisch had five saves during the game. MLC (1-2) will play at Hamline Wednesday.
