Carthage runs

KENOSHA, Wis. -- Randal Baker rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns, and Carthage intecepted five Martin Luther passes as the Redmen defeated the Knights 21-7 Saturday afternoon in nonconference football at Art Keller Field.

Baker, who had 26 carries in the game, scored both of his touchdowns in the first half.

With their running game grounded, the Knights took to the air 57 times. Senior Ben Kuerth was 23 of 57 for 234 yards, but was picked off five times.

MLC senior wide receiver Mike Feuerstahler had a game-high nine catches for 110 yards. Stephawn Coleman caught five passes for 42 yards, including MLC's lone score -- a 10-yarder from Kuerth in the second quarter.

Rob Garnes, who had been a major concern for the Knights defense, was held to five receptions and 40 yards. The Redmen only threw the ball 11 times.

Carthage (2-0) kept the ball on the ground, piling up 261 yards on 52 attempts. The Redmen outgained the Knights in total offense 334-263.

Baker put the Redmen up 7-0 with 8:03 left in the first quarter on a 1-yard run that capped a nine-play, 65-yard drive. MLC (0-3) answered midway through the second when Kuerth found Coleman at the 7:53 mark, ending a seven-play, 71-yard drive.

Carthage went up 14-7 with 3:42 in the first half on a 25-yard run by Baker and then 21-7 with 12:46 in the fourth quarter Brown ran it in from the MLC 8 to finish an eight-play, 80-yard march.

MLC will host Mount Senario at 1 p.m. Saturday.
