MVL and SCMC top cross-country meet

SLEEPY EYE -- Led by a second-place finish from senior Phil Moldenhauer, the Minnesota Valley Lutheran Chargers won the boys Tomahawk Conference meet Tuesday afternoon at Sleepy Eye Golf Course. The Chargers finished with 20 points; Springfield/Cedar Mountain/Comfrey was second with 45 points and Sleepy Eye St. Mary's/Sleepy Eye High was third with 61 points.

Buffalo Lake-Hector and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop were incomplete.

BLH's Josh Jacobitz won with a time of 17:25.

On the girls side, SCMC edged SMSE 35-37. MVL was third with 53 points; the Knights' Geri Carr took top honors in the girls race in 16:32.

BLH and GFW were incomplete in the girls meet.

Moldenhauer finished in 17:49. Charger sophomore Dusty Lendt was third in 17:50, Jeremy Bilitz fourth in 17:57 and Brent Krohn was seventh in 18:21.

All four earned All-Tomahawk Conference honors with their finishes.

Other runners earning all-conference honors were Randy Potter of SCMC (5th, 18:04) and SMSE's Chris Haugen (6th, 18:09). Pat Leopold of SCMC (8th, 18:27), MVL's Jeremy Costello (9th, 18:27) and GFW's Neil Deckers (10th, 18:47) earned honorable mention.

Abe Krueger of SCMC was 11th with a time of 18:57, five seconds ahead of 12th-place finisher Mike Pinske of MVL. SMSE's Jamie Markuson crossed the line in 13th with a time of 19:11 and Justin Anderson of SCMC was 14th in 19:14.

MVL sophomore Beth Windschitl was second in the girls race in 16:34. Teammate Lawanda Johnson was fourth with a time of 17:17.

Windschitl and Johnson earned All-Tomahawk honors with their respective finishes.

Also earning all-conference honors were: Christa Reiner of SCMC (3rd, 16:52), Julia Eckstein of SMSE (5th, 17:22), and SCMC's Steph Dolezal (6th, 17:46) and Jeama Schultz (7th, 17:49). Kylie Dauer of SCMC (8th, 17:50), SMSE's Michelle Eckstein (9th, 18:00) and the Knights Katie Schumacher (10th, 18:06) were honorable mention.

The Tigers' Kristy Schmid was 11th in 18:09 and Maria Wenner of SMSE was 12th in 18:09. Courtney Baumgardt of BLH came in 13th in a time of 18:23 and SCMC's Kristen Pederson was 14th in 18:36.

SMSE's Scott DeMaris was named conference girls coach of the year. MVL's Megan Johnson was selected conference boys coach of the year.
