NEW ULM -- Jeff Schnobrich, the All-Journal Area Offensive Player of the Year, has worked for his success.

The hard work Schnobrich put in off the field showed in his performance on the field as he broke numerous New Ulm Cathedral records in the Greyhounds' successful, 9-2, season.

"He is good in the classroom, he runs hard and has great lateral movement," Lux said, adding that he is in the top five of his class. "He is in second gear in two steps. He worked hard in the weight room and he is involved in so many activities in school."

The list goes on. But the one comment that really stands out is that "Schnobrich brings out the best in everybody around him. He is so positive," Lux said. "People feel better because he is so positive and encouraging."

This season, Schnobrich repeated his feat of last season when he broke the 1,000-yard mark with 1,390 yards on 169 carries for an 8.2 yards-per-carry average and scored 19 touchdowns. All are Cathedral school records.

He also set a school single-game record with 302 yards rushing against Wabasso.

Those marks led the Greyhounds to a 9-2 record, a share of the Southern Minnesota Conference title and a second place finish in Section 2A.

He also set another school record with 2,050 all-purpose yards and ends his career with 352 carries for 2,487 yards and a seven yards-per-carry average, also school records.

His career all-purpose yards are also a Greyhound record at 3,478 along with 29 rushing touchdowns.

Schnobrich's success on the field did not begin there. Many people who live close to Harman Park could see him running up and down the hill almost every day.

"One of the things that I always said to myself when I was doing that training was '1,000 yards -- 1,000 yards,'" he said. "I wanted to repeat what I did last year ... but other than that, my goals were team goals."

He also spent many more hours in the weight room this year.

The running back's success on the field is also a reflection of his classroom success, and he feels that the two go hand-in-hand.

"I think that some of the attitudes that you have going into both of them are similar," Schnobrich said. "You need to be determined -- you want to be successful and striving for the best. Maybe not perfection but doing the best that you can do."

Schnobrich is also one who does not look for the glory, but pushes off the publicity to others.

"I could not do anything without the offensive line. One person who I have not mentioned much is [fullback] Ryan Turbes and the other backs that have been going out in front of me putting guys on their backs," he said. "They deserve a ton of the credit."

Schnobrich will play hockey with and baseball this year before turning toward college. Right now, Schnobrich is looking at St. John's University as one of his potential college choices.

"That would be great to go there and play under coach Gagliardi," he said. " That is still up in the air yet -- I will determine that when I decide where I am going to go to college."

Schnobrich will carry the success he has had at Cathedral to college and beyond.

"I can tell you that from what I have seen here at Cathedral as head coach that I have not seen anyone run as hard and as determined as Jeff."
