Nicollet hosts 'Johnson Duals'NICOLLET -- Nicollet High School calls its holiday wrestling tournament the "Johnson Duals" for good reason. Nicollet's wrestling team is coached by Steve Johnson, and every other team in the tournament has a Johnson connection. Centennial High School is coached by Steve's son Chad. Wayzata High School is coached by Steve's son Ross. Eden Valley-Watkins is coached by Steve's brother Jay. And St. Paul Johnson High School is just "Johnson." The Johnson Duals were held Saturday at Nicollet High School, and Nicollet, Centennial and Wayzata all finished with 3-1 records. St. Paul Johnson finished 1-3, and Eden Valley-Watkins finished 0-4. In the first round, Wayzata defeated Eden Valley-Watkings 54-24, and Centennial downed St. Paul Johnson 39-35. In the second round, Nicollet defeated Eden Valley-Watkins34-27, and Wayzata beat Johnson 45-24. In Round 3, Nicollet defeated Johnson 37-31 and Centennial beat Wayzata 42-22. In Round 4, Nicollet beat Centennial 36-30, and Johnson beat Eden Valley-Watkins 43-24. In the fifth and final round, Wayzata beat Nicollet 48-32, and Centennial beat Eden-Valley Watkins 41-27. For Nicollet, Ryan Grommerch at 119 had a 4-0 record for the tournament. Josh Olsen was 2-0, Andrew Olsen was 3-1, Dan Compart was 3-1, Jason Gleason was 2-0, Jim Wagner was 3-1, and Phillip Hawkins was 3-1.
