The School Board of Independent School District 88 met in regular/organizational session on Thursday, January 8, 2004, in the Production Lab of New Ulm Senior High School. Members present: Sue Ullery, Steve Wachter, Brian Wieland, Carol Ackerson, Marc Burkhart, Susan Nierengarten, and Sheldon Rieke. Also present: Superintendent Harold Remme, and Business Manager Donna Luhring. Absent: Director of Curriculum/Instruction and Personnel Bill Sprung.

The meeting was called to order and guests were welcomed by Chairperson Ullery.

1. Rieke/Ackerson for the 2003 Board Officers to remain the same for the 2004 calendar year: Chairperson- Sue Ullery, Vice-Chairman-Steve Wachter, Clerk-Susan Nierengarten, Treasurer-Brian Wieland. (7-0)

2. Wieland/Burkhart to approve Board of Education compensation of $1,200.00 annually for each director, $35.00 per extra meeting, and $70.00 per day long training session. (7-0)

3. Committee members were selected for standing committees and board representation to school committees.

4. Nierengarten/Rieke approval of the consent agenda items as presented: declared to be a legal meeting, approval of the agenda; approval of December 18, 2003 minutes; approval of wire transfers totaling $1,715,397.13; acceptance of November 2003 Cash Balance Report; acceptance of donations; accepted the resignations of Ben Scharf, Eldon Hartwigsen, and Donna Pawlik and Linda Barkaloff- (Extended Day Teachers); approval of hirings of Sarah Beck and Susan Clough; approval of Nonresident Student Attendance Agreement. (7-0)

5. Students of the Week certificates were given to: Kristen Neigebauer, Amy Waldner, Julie Commerford, Erin Smith, Emily Pearson, and Jenna Meyer.

6. Information Reports- Superintendent's Report, Long Range Planning Task Force Update, Mediation Report, Activity Committee Report, and Announcements.

7. Dialogue Time: Policy Review and Comment- Second Review of Policies 516, 518, 519, 520, 521, 527, 529, 536 and repeal of policies 622 and 516P. First Review of Policies- 511, 614, 616.

8. Nierengarten/Ackerson adoption of revised policies: 516- Student Medication, 518- Do Not Resuscitate/Do Not Intubate Orders, 519- Interviews of Students by Outside Agencies, 520- Student Surveys, 521- Student Dress and Appearance, 527- Student Use and Parking of Motor Vehicles; Patrols, Inspections and Searches, 529- Staff Notification of Violent Behavior by Students, 536- Student Safety Policy and repeal policies 622- Profile of Learning Appeal Process and 516P- Procedures for Administering Student Medication with revisions as noted. (7-0)

9. Wachter introduced the resolution directing administration to make recommendation for reductions in programs and positions. The motion was duly seconded by Wieland, the following voted in favor thereof: Burkhart, Nierengarten, Rieke, Ullery, Wachter, Wieland, and Ackerson whereupon said resolution was declared duly passed and adopted. (7-0)

10. Nierengarten/Wachter approval of the Senior High Choir Trip to London, England in the Summer of 2004 at no expense to ISD 88 and requiring the ISD 88 Business Office to track all expenditures/revenues as well as participant permission slips to be on file prior to departure. All participants (adults, 18 or older) will be required to sign a Waiver of Liability. (7-0)

11. Wieland/Rieke approval of supplementary payroll for December and bills for audit for January 9, 2004. (7-0)

12. Ackerson/Burkhart adjournment at 8:32p.m. (7-0)
