Regular Meeting of the Board of Education Independent School District 88 New Ulm, Minnesota
A Regular Meeting of the Board of Education of Independent School District 88, New Ulm, Minnesota, was held on Thursday, June 12, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. in the Annex Board Room. Members present: Tim Babel, Susan Nierengarten, Sue Ullery, Dr. Steve Wachter, Brian Wieland, and Carol Ackerson. Also present: Superintendent Harold Remme, Business Manager Donna Luhring, and Director of Curriculum/Instruction and Personnel Bill Sprung. Absent: Sheldon Rieke.
The meeting was called to order and guests were welcomed by Chairperson Ullery at 7:00 p.m.
1. Ackerson/Wieland to approve the consent agenda items as presented. (Unanimous.)
The meeting was declared a legal meeting; approved the agenda with the addition of an addendum/supplement, the May 22, 2003 minutes, wire transfers totaling $1,342,043.22, and the April 2003 Cash Balance Report; accepted the donations from Rebecca Schaetzke, Douglas Howard, Books Are Fun, Karla Hansel, Flip Schulke, Domino's Pizza, Hy-Vee Foods, Puhlmann's Lumber & Design, Herbert Klossner, 3M, Brown County Victim Services, Citizen's Bank of New Ulm, Brown County Child Care Professionals, Mary Grefe, Kemske Paper Company, Interagency Early Intervention Committee, The Bohemian, Haar Friseure, Reka Nelemans, Marlyn Drexler, Jill Berdan, Sally Dannenberg, Child Care Resource and Referral, Sam's Club in Mankato, Shining Stars Early Learning Center, Schultz Plumbing & Heating, Inc. 2. The following reports were given: Superintendent's Report by Supt. Harold Remme, Negotiations Committee Report by Susan Nierengarten, and Announcements by Sue Ullery. 3. Supt. Remme shared a legislative update. A packet of possible meeting dates for the 2003-2004 Board of Education meetings was distributed. A decision will be made at the next board meeting as to which calendar will be utilized. A budget packet for the 2003-2004 was distributed and discussion was held. 4. Nierengarten/Wachter to hire Pamela Kirsch as the New Ulm High School Assistant Prinicpal at a salary of $65,800 for a 220 day contract with application of fringe benefits and considerations as per Principal Master Agreement. (Unanimous.)
5. Wachter/Wieland to approve the revised copy of the 2003-2004 school calendar as presented. (Unanimous.)
6. Babel/Wachter to approve the bid of $98,900.00 from TEK Mechanical for boiler installation at Washington Elementary. (Unanimous.)
7. Nierengarten/Babel to approve the summer contract extensions for the High School Counselors-90 hours; Elementary Counselors-up to three days; School Nurse-up to three days; and Supervised Ag Experience-two, five-week contracts. (Unanimous.)
8. Nierengarten/Babel to grant Cynthia Schultz an Extended Leave of Absence without pay or fringe benefits for up to five years, renewable annually. (The motion passed on a 5 to 1 vote with Wieland voting against.)
9. Nierengarten/Wieland to approve Supplementary Payroll for May 2003 in the amount of $52,461.73 and bills for audit for June 13, 2003 in the total amount of $969,645.97 as presented. (Unanimous.)
10. Ackerson/Babel to approve the hiring of Michelle Brandel as a full-time speech language pathologist for ISD 88 at Step 04, Lane MA effective 8/26/03. (Unanimous.)
11. Babel/Ackerson to enter into contract with the law firm of Johnson and Condon P.A. to represent ISD 88 in air quality improvement litigation matters. (Unanimous.)
12. Babel/Wieland to adjourn the meeting at 8:17 p.m. (Unanimous.) 13. A closed taped negotiation strategy session was held immediately following the meeting.
