Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madelia with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Pilgrim Funeral Home and one hour before the church service. Margaret E. Burke, 87, of 123 N. Franklin in New Ulm, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at her home. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at United Church of Christ in New Ulm with burial in Oneota Cemetery in Duluth at a later date. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday and 7:30-9 a.m. Thursday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and continues one hour before services Thursday at the church. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret "Peggy" and Wally Leander of New Ulm; three grandchildren, Kristie Mitchell of Chaska, Keith Leander and his wife Lori of Brooklyn Park, and Becky Leander of Malibu, Calif.; four great-grandchildren, Luke Mitchell, Ashley Leander, Cory Leander, and Jordan Leander; sister, Alice Chalman of Rice Lake, Wis.; brother and sister-in-law, Orval Chalman and his wife Doris of Duluth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Burke in 1971; one sister and three brothers. She was born on July 11, 1911 in Rice lake, Wis., to Olger and Christina (Peterson) Chalman. She attended Danfeld High School in Duluth. She married Peter Burke on Sept. 10, 1938, in Duluth. In 1991 when she moved from Duluth to New Ulm. She worked at the Glass Block in Duluth. She attended Adult Day Services at United Church of Christ for the last six years. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Lakeside (Duluth), the Altar Guild & Quilters, past president of the Golden Age at Portman Senior Center in Duluth, member of the Church Women United, 4 ever Fifty - Salvation Army, Minnesota Senior Coalition, AARP 419, Salvation Army Home League and the Nordmanns-Forbundet (The Norseman's Federation). Arthur M. Hovden, 93, of St. James died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village in Mountain Lake. Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church of Christ in Madelia with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery in St. James. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. today at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James and continues one hour prior to services at the church. He is survived by wife, Cora Hovden of St. James; son, Robert and wife Julie Hovden of Centerville, Ohio; daughter, Marilyn and husband James Schultz of Mt. Lake; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by sister, Emma Madson; brothers, Carl, George, Alfred and Ervin Hovden. He was born Feb. 10, 1905, in Rosendale Township, Watonwan County, to Berndt and Amelia (Olson) Hovden. He was raised in Rosendale Township where he received attended District 52. He farmed with his father after school and worked in Minneapolis before returning to farming. On March 15, 1931 he married Cora Nichtern at Yankton, SD. They farmed in Rosendale Township until he retired into St. James in 1977. He was also a sales representative for Badger Farm Equipment. He was a member of the Church of Christ of Madelia, where he served as council member, trustee and deacon.
