   Vernon Nilson, 78, of rural New Ulm, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
   Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery in New Ulm.
   Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m. Friday and 7:30 -11 a.m. Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
   Vernon is survived by his wife Gladys Nilson of rural New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Galen and Rhonna Nilson of Lake Crystal, Dwight and Mary Beth Nilson of New Ulm, and Jerry and Sherray Nilson of New Ulm; grandchildren, Cory, Justin, Trevor, Samuel, Kimberly, Adam, Melissa and Katie; a great-grandson, Colby; and a brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Mary Lou Nilson of Bloomington.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a brother, Myron Nilson.
   Vernon was born Dec. 29, 1924, in Redwood Falls, to Nils and Anna (Anderson) Nilson. Vernon attended New Ulm schools and graduated from New Ulm High School in 1944. He married Gladys Harbo on March 23, 1947. After marriage they farmed in Milford Township, Brown County. In 1955 they purchased a second farm in West Newton Township, Nicollet County, where they lived from 1955 - 1965.
   In 1965, they sold their farm in Nicollet County and moved back to their farm in Brown County. Vernon continued to farm and also owned and operated a sanitation business in New Ulm. Vernon enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, deer hunting and bird watching.
