Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. today, with a 4 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m parish prayer service, and continues 7:30-9:30 a.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. He is survived by wife, Marlene, of Sleepy Eye; daughter, Cheryl Brodman of Allen, Texas; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Paula Windschitl, Kevin and Jean Windschitl, Alan and Nancy Windschitl all of Sleepy Eye, Warren and Bonnie Windschitl of North Mankato, Joel and Holly Windschitl of Victoria; 12 grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leo Windschitl of Franklin, Herbert and Bernettta Windschitl of Cold Spring, Pete and Lois Windschitl of Comfrey; sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Mel Cook of Comfrey; sister-in-law Ardis and husband Dennis Griebel of New Ulm; brother-in-law, Marvin and wife Donna Roiger of Springfield. He was preceded in death by brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Delores Windschitl; and son-in-law Arnie Brodman. He was born Oct. 17, 1932, in Sleepy Eye to Florian and Anna (Moldan) Windschitl. He grew up on a farm in Mulligan Township and attended country school. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye. He operated a saw mill on the home farm, worked with pea viners, and farmed for one year. He married Marlene Ann Roiger on Sept. 1, 1954 in Springfield. He worked for Mathiowetz Construction from 1955 to 1998 as a road construction supervisor. He was a member of the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth where he served as an usher. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Edna Gutknecht, 94 of Minneapolis, formerly of Winthrop, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at University Good Samaritan Center in Minneapolis. A private family burial will be held later this month at the Winthrop Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are through Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop. She is survived by sister-in-law, Esther Jager of Buffalo Lake; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Sidney, Bert, and Siegfried Jaeger; and sisters Agnes Grunwaldt, Sabina Johnson, Bernett Solcomb. She was born Jan. 9, 1905 in Winthrop to Richard and Emelia (Frank) Jaeger, She grew up in the Winthrop area and later moved to Minneapolis where she was employed as a cook and a housekeeper. She entered the University Good Samaritan Center in 1991. William (Bill) Thedens, 82, of Oak Hills Living Center died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at the center. Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the City Cemetery. Visitation is 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 a.m-11 a.m. on Friday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law. Carol and John Simmons and Connie and Michael Cochran all of Mankato, Cindy and Dennis Gustafson of New Ulm, Bonnie and Gary Mellen of Fairmont; sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Mary Ann Thedens of Sleepy Eye, Curtis and Dianne Thedens of Mankato, Charles and Yvonne Thedens of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Ralph and Mary Thedens of Bremerton, Wash.; 23 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and sisters, Dorothy Strum of New Ulm, and Marie Roiger of Mankato. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian Thedens on May 31, 1974; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph Thedens; and a sister, Rose Kuehn. He was born June 25, 1916 in New Ulm to Carl and Anna (Thiel) Thedens. He married Lillian Roiger on July 3, 1940 at Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived in the New Ulm and Madelia area where he worked for George Carlstrom Construction in Mankato and for Tony Downs in Madelia. He retired in the early 1980s. He had been a resident of the Highland Manor Nursing Home and Oak Hills Living Center since 1993. Orville H. Buss, 90, formerly of New Ulm died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at Winthrop Good Samaritan Care Center. Services are 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is 10:30 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. He is survived by daughter, Jeri Carlson and her husband Robin of Bloomington; son, Dr. Robert Buss and his wife Mary of Brookfield, Wis.; grandchildren, Ryan and Katy Carlson of Bloomington, Dr. Robert Christopher Buss and his wife Carrie of Waukeshaw, Wis., Michael Buss of Austin, Texas, Peter Buss and his wife Evie of Whitewater, Wis., Jonathan Buss of Hollywood, Calif., and Matthew Buss of Brookfield, Wis.; one great-grandchild, Nathaniel Buss; sister, Mildred Christian of Pecatonica, Ill. He was preceded in death by his Cloetta "Claudette" in 1990; brothers, Frances Buss and Virgil Buss. He was born on March 21, 1908 in Andover, S.D., to Hermann and Lucy (Burns) Buss. He graduated from Fergus Falls High School and University of North Dakota Pharmacy School. He married Cloetta "Claudette" Hager on Feb. 10, 1937, in Mankato. They lived in Mankato until moving to New Ulm in 1944. He was employed as a pharmacist at Backer Drug, which is now New Ulm Drug, for more than 30 years until retiring in 1975. Marian Melges, 89 of Spokane, Wash., formerly of Redwood Falls died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, in Spokane. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Presbyterian Church in Redwood Falls with burial in the Redwood Falls Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday at Nelson Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and continues one hour before the service at the church. She is survived by sons, Harold L. Melges of Plano, Ill., David K. Melges of Spokane, Wash.; daughter, Noreen and of Spokane; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Gladys Hateli of Rushford; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold on Oct. 11, 1986. She was born Feb. 19, 1909, in Winona to Lewis W. and Jessie M. (Pickle) Luetje. She attended Winona schools and was a bookkeeper for Bay State Milling Co. in Winona prior to her marriage to H. K. Melges of Redwood Falls on March 6, 1935. She was an active member and first women elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Redwood Falls until moving to Rushford in October 1990. She belonged to church circles in both communities and was a "Meals on Wheels" volunteer. She was secretary of Redwood Falls Presbyterian Church and receptionist for Drs. W. C. Lee and A. W. Fuhr in Redwood Falls. She lived in Spokane since 1994. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association or a charity of the donor's choice. Hazel Otto, 83 or Osakis, formerly of Redwood Falls, died Sunday, Jan 17, 1999 in Osakis. Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls with burial in the Redwood Falls Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Nelson Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and continues one our before services Thursday at the church. She is survived by sons, Gary of Plymouth, Richard and wife Judy of North Richland Hills, Texas, David and wife Beverly of Bloomington, Jon and wife Debra of Grapevine, Texas, Charles and wife Ruth of Atwater; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters Gladys Zaske of Morgan, Lydia Tretbar of Redwood Falls. She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. She was born Nov. 14, 1914, in Morgan to William and Anna (Anderson) Root. On Jan. 24, 1938, she married Stanley M. Otto in Sioux Falls, S,D. They lived in Redwood Falls and belonged to St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church. She served on the Redwood Falls Cemetery Board. They retired in 1975 and moved to Lake Darling near Alexandria. In January 1998 they moved to Terrace Heights in Osakis.
