Loy Cleo Trowbridge, 91, of St. James, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000 in St. James. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, St. James, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, St. James. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home, St. James, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church. She is survived by her husband Louis; daughters, Dulcie and husband Paul Lipman of Amherst, Mass., and Lorna and husband Douglas DeDecker of Evans, Ga.; four grandchildren; a sister Adelyne Tibbetts Stichfield of Lake Vermillion; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister Mela Bialke. She was born April 17, 1908 in Grand Junction, Colo., to Lloyd and Addie (Everett) Shively. She spent her childhood on Lake Vermillion near Cook. She graduated from Biwabik High School in 1927. She graduated from Mankato State University with a degree in education. She married Louis Trowbridge on May 27, 1945 in Duluth. She taught for 28 years in Brownton, Cokato, Olivia and St. James. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, youth fellowship leader and elder. She was a member of the hospital board, hospital auxiliary, county library board and county extension board. Raymond M. Johnson, 90, of Springfield, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000 at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Services are 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Springfield, with burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Windom. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. today and 7:30-9 a.m. Monday at Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church Monday. He is survived by daughters, Shirley and husband David Halvorson of Wilmington, N.C., Sandy and husband Stan Peichel of Anoka, and Kay and husband Richard Bellig of Bettendorf, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Leone in 1950; wife Marge in 1999; grandchildren, Steven Bellig and Beth Halvorson; and six brothers and sisters. He was born July 4, 1909 on Fish Lake near Windom, to Henry and Caroline (Olson) Johnson. He attended school in Windom, graduating from high school in 1928. He attended the University of Minnesota and came back to help on the family farm. He opened Ray's Cafe and the Twin Barrels Night Club in Windom. He married Leone Spencer on May 24, 1936 in Windom. The couple moved to Springfield in 1949, where he opened Johnson's Federated Department Store. He married Margaret "Marge" (Simpson) Cervene on Feb. 2, 1953 in Redwood Falls. After operating the department store for several years, he worked for Waddell and Reed selling investments and securities until his retirement. He drove a school bus in Springfield. He was active in the Springfield Chamber of Commerce and the Masonic Lodge. He was a charter member of Springfield Rotary Club and helped develop the Windom Country Club and the Springfield Golf Club. Walter Zachow, 83, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Glencoe Area Health Center. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Gaylord, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Monday at Egesdal Funeral Home, Gaylord, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church. He is survived by his wife Bernice; sons and daughters-in-law Allan and Donna of Gaylord, Roger of Gaylord, Dennis and Nita of North Augusta, S.C., Ronald and Sandra of Winthrop, Walt Jr. of Harlem, Ga., and Gene and his special friend Annie Kregnas of Duluth; daughters and sons-in-law Linda of Gaylord, JoAnn of Gaylord, Lois and Orv Grund of Watertown, S.D., Sarah and Ron Kirsch of Gaylord and Arlene and Mark Kuphal of Gaylord; 13 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter in infancy; and brother Willmar. He was born June 13, 1916 to Albert and Louisa (Sylvester) Zachow in Gaylord. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School. On March 31, 1936, he married Bernice Franke in Sibley Township, rural Gaylord. After their marriage they lived and farmed in the Gaylord area for 26 years. They moved into Gaylord in 1962, where he worked for Poquette Chevrolet until his retirement in 1981. He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was a former member of the Gaylord Baseball Association. He helped organize and manage the annual Farmer-City Slicker Baseball Game in Gaylord. Bernette Leske, 81, of Buffalo Lake, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000 at Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zion United Methodist Church, Buffalo Lake, with burial in Zion Evangelical Cemetery, Buffalo Lake. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at Hughes Funeral Home, Hector, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday. She is survived by her husband Ira; sons, Keith and wife Mary of Buffalo Lake and Dean of Two Harbors; five step-grandchildren; a brother Willard Maahs and wife Diane of Litchfield; a sister-in-law Bernice Maahs of Cosmos; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Ruth Bergmann; and a brother Erdman Maahs. She was born June 26, 1918 near Cedar Mills, Meeker County, to Albert and Ella (Saar) Maahs. She married Ira Leske on Nov. 10, 1942 in Meeker County. They farmed south of Buffalo Lake, retiring in 1997. She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, Buffalo Lake, where she was active in the Ladies Aid and United Methodist Youth fellowship. She moved to Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center in January 1999. Marie Puhlmann, 79, of New Ulm died Friday, January 28, 2000, at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm, with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday and 7:30 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. She is survived by her husband Jim Puhlmann of New Ulm; a son and daughter-in-law, Hans and Bette Puhlmann of New Ulm; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sisters, Sister Helen Saffert of Chicago, Ill., and Roselyn Haggbloom and her husband Lloyd of Bonita Springs, Fla.; a brother Stan Saffert and his wife Donna of Burnsville; a sister-in-law, Marge Saffert of New Ulm; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Leo Saffert, a sister Edna Schreyer, and brother-in-law Mel Schreyer. Marie Elizabeth Saffert was born June 13, 1920, in New Ulm to John and Julia (Reinhart) Saffert. She attended Holy Trinity School. She married Jim Puhlmann on Dec.13, 1941 in New Ulm. She worked for Eibner's and later several years for the former Schmucker Reliable Drug Store in New Ulm. She later worked many years with her husband at Puhlmann Lumber Company, until retiring in 1989. She became a resident of the Oak Hills Living Center in July 1995. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Turner Hall, the Turner Ladies for many years, and was very active in various local bridge clubs. Jeffrey N. Larsen, 53, of Dodge Center, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Hwy. 14 west of Dodge Center. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Czaplewski Family Funeral Home, Dodge Center, with burial and full military honors by the Dodge Center American Legion Post in Riverside Cemetery, Dodge Center. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and will continue one hour prior to services Tuesday. He is survived by his wife Judy; sons Michael and Daniel of Dodge Center; a daughter Amanda Davis of Glencoe; brothers, Jay of Brookings, S.D., Jon of Armstrong, Iowa and Steven of Minneapolis; and a sister Janice Wiederhoeft of Truman. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was born May 19, 1946 in Madelia to Loyal and Marilyn (Montgomery) Larsen. He married Judy Weise on Feb. 6, 1971 in New Ulm. He lived in Madelia until 1980, when he moved to Dodge Center. He worked as a grain merchandiser for Cargill Inc. of Minneapolis for 19 years, as well as several elevators in the region. He recently worked for McNeilus Steel, Dodge Center. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Dodge County Country Club.
