Marie A. Mathiowetz, 87, of Comfrey, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 at home in Mulligan Township. Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003 at Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30-9 a.m. Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield and Wednesday at the church, one hour prior to the service. A rosary will be held at 4 p.m. and parish prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Marie Anna Hillesheim, the daughter of John and Bertha (Sellner) Hillesheirn, was bom October 23, 1915 in Mulligan Topwnship, Brown County. She attended country school, District #70, after which she helped at home and others in the area. On May 4, 1937, she married Herman J. Mathiowetz at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. Following marriage, they moved to their current farm in Mulligan Township. Marie was a lifetime member of the Church of the Japanese Martyrs, a member of the Christian Mothers and the Catholic Aid Association. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, crafts, canning, cooking, playing cards, visiting with friends, spending time with her grandchildren, and especially enjoyed her time working at Augustin's Butcher shop, and visiting with the clients, where she was employed for nearly 30 years. Survivors include two daughters - Phyllis Aanonson of Anchorage, Alaska and Bernice Savage of Rochester, MN; two sons - Marvin Mathiowetz of Princeton, MN and Gerald and wife Mary Lou Mathiowetz of Comfrey, MN; 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; a brother - James and wife Roselia Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye and sisters - Helen and husband Sylvester Helget of Sleepy Eye and Florence Seidl of Faribault, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband - Herman in 1996; a son in infancy; a brother - Edmund Hillesheirn and sister - Agnes Treml. Melvin F. Cesar, 77, of Mapleton, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003 at the Mapleton Community Home. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mapleton with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday at the church, two hours prior to the service. Olson-Tichenor Funeral Home is handling arrangements. A complete obituary will run in a later edition. Joseph McCarthy, 53, of New Ulm, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. Forrest L. Leith, 63, of Redwood Falls, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 at Redwood Area Hospital. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003 at St. Cornelia's Episcopal Church on the Lower Sioux Community with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 4 p.m. Monday until services Tuesday at the Community Hall in the Lower Sioux Community. He is survived by his wife Cathy of Redwood Falls; 5 children, Shahn, Mimi, Jaclyn and Robin all of Redwood Falls and Kirk of Jordan; stepchildren Shannon Frauly of Coon Rapids, Jim Horejsi of Echo and David Haroldson of Alamosa, Colo.; 6 grandchildren; a great grandchild; 4 step grandchildren; siblings Charles of Redwood Falls, Sandy DeGroat of Mound and Leota DeGroat of Brooklyn Park. He was born Oct. 22, 1939 in Pipestone to Charles (Jackson) and Leona Welch Welch Leith. Redwood Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
