Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Nora Unitarian-Universalist Church, with burial to follow in the Mount Pisquah Cemetery, both near Hanska. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Firle Funeral Home in Hanska is handling the arrangements. Paul Alvin Kjolstad, the son of Thor and Ragna (Olson) Kjolstad, was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Linden Township, Brown County, Minn. He attended country school and farmed his entire life in Linden and Lake Hanska townships. He moved to the Prince of Peace Retirement Community in November 2000. He loved music and played his harmonica for fellow residents there. He was an active long-time member of the Nora Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hanska, serving on the cemetery board, and also tended to the museum. He sang with barbershop groups in Hanska and Lake Crystal for many years. Paul was very proud of his Norwegian heritage and visited with many visitors from Norway and also visited the country with his sister, Edith. He was known to translate letters from Norway for neighbors and friends. He was very proud of the land he famed. Paul gave shelter and love to many a stray dog over the years. He was an avid reader and could converse with anyone about most anything. He loved to visit with others in the Troll Hus, Hanska's local restaurant. He was a loving uncle, survived by his niece LaVonne Grassel and her husband Terry of Sioux Falls, S.D. He is also survived by other relatives here and in Norway. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Edith Dahl. Dr. Deane W. Benton, 87, of Hector and fornerly of New Ulm, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the City Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm veterans organizations. Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A complete obituary will appear in Friday's edition. Lydia Tretbar, 93, of Redwood Falls, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Redwood Falls, with burial in the Morgan City Cemetery. Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls. She is survived by daughters, Jean Barber of Hastings and Audrey Almich of Marshall; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was born Dec. 1, 1908, in Sherman Township, Redwood County, to William and Anna (Anderson) Root.
