Sandmann, 77 of Route 1, New Ulm died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at the New Ulm Medical Center. Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the New Ulm City Cemetery. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in New Ulm. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today at the Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm and one hour prior to the service at the church. He is survived by wife Eunice of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law Nancy and John Paulson of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law Scott and Wendy Sandmann of Eagan, Doyle Sandmann, Mark and Francie Sandmann, Jerry and Kristine Sandmann, all of New Ulm; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Linda and her husband Linda and Roger Swenson of Norseland. He was preceded in death by daughter Robin Joy Sandmann; granddaughter Tanya Mary Sandmann. He was born July 8, 1921 in Evan to Edward and Elvina (Gluth) Sandmann. His family moved to Milford Township, Brown County where he attended country school. He lived and farmed in Milford Township his entire life. He married Eunice Peterson Aug. 22, 1946. He drove a bus for 15 years for New Ulm Bus Lines after retiring from farming. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in New Ulm, serving on both the Board of Trustees and the Finance Board. He was a Shriner and Mason for more than 50 years. Edna M. Podratz, 87, formerly of Gibbon died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at the Arlington Municipal Hospital in Arlington. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon and one hour prior to the service at the church. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law William and Orda Podratz of Albert Lea; daughters and sons-in-law Delores and Ervin Lund of Fairfax, Luella and Lester Draeger of rural Winthrop and Renee and Al Schmit of rural New Ulm; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three step-great-granchildren; five great-great grandchildren; one step-great great grandchild; sisters and brothers in law, Esther Sell of Glencoe, Malinda Sell of Hutchinson, Lydia Buerkle of Gibbon, Ruth and Wayne Olson of Vancouver, Wash., Dorothy Kaatz of Buffalo Lake, Melva and Jim Peterson of rural Sleepy Eye. She was preceeded in death by her husband Henry A. Podratz in 1967; brother Arthur Niebuhr; a grandson in infancy; a great-grand daughter in infancy; daughter, Burnell Gorr; five brothers-in-law. She was born on Feb. 19, 1912 in Moltke Township, Sibley County to William and Sophie (Jahnke) Niebuhr. She attended country school in rural Gibbon. She married Henry A. Podratz Dec. 7, 1929 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Parsonage in Gibbon. After their marriage they moved to Glencoe and worked as farm hands for a number of years before moving back to the Gibbon area to farm. They moved into Gibbon in 1966 after retiring from farming. She was a member of the Senior Citizens in Gibbon and was also a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon. Wesley "Wes" Kassuelke, 90, of New Ulm died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, at the St. Paul"s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and one hour prior to the service at the church. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Lonna Kassuelke of St. Joseph, Ill.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Marcella Sommers of New Ulm, Lillian and her husband John Bernosky of Port Huron, Mich.; brother, Arthur Kassuelke of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by brothers, Willmar and Leander Kassuelke; sisters, Elvia Wendland, and Orevilla Wieland. He was born Jan. 23, 1909, in Cottonwood Township, Brown County to Gotthilf and Emmy (Engelbert) Kassuelke. He attended Cottonwood Township Country School and St. Paul"s Lutheran School in New Ulm. He worked construction in the New Ulm area. He also worked for Bekins and the Mayflower Moving Companies for many years. He retired at the age of 83. He lived at the Lutheran Memorial Home in Madelia since 1997 and moved to Oak Hills Living Center in February of this year. He was a member of the St. Paul"s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Ardis Michaelson, 79 of Cottonwood died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Balaton. Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Christ Lutheran Church in Cottonwood with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are through Sunset Funeral Home in Echo . She is survived by husband Orville; daughters and sons-in-law Charyl and Ed Heidemann of Sleepy Eye, Kary; and Glenn Bower of Cottonwood; four grandsons; one great-grandson. She was born Oct. 12, 191 in Vallers Township, Lyon County, to Aldoph and Alma (Hall) Nyland. Her mother died shortly after Ardis' birth and she was raised by uncle and aunt Rasmus and Oline Ueland on a farm near Cottonwood. She attended country school and graduated in 1937 from Cottonwood High School, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Cloud State in 1941. She taught school before marrying Orville Michaelson Dec. 25, 1942 at the Helgen Lutheran Church in Florence, S.D. They lived in Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Kentucky while Orville was in the service, They moved onto her family farm in Cottonwood in 1952, moving into Cottonwood in 1971 where she served as director of the Cottonwood Housing and Development Authority. She was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church in Cottonwood, a member of ALCW and WELCA, American Legion Auxilary, and the Vallers Sewing Club. She also taught Sunday school. Paul Vorwerk, 81, of New Ulm died Thursday, March 4, 1999 at the Whitewater Health Care Center in St. Charles, Minnesota. Funeral arrangements are pending with Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. A complete obituary will appear in a later edition of The Journal. Anton "Tony" Petersen, 90, formerly of New Ulm died Monday, December 8, 1997 at the Prairie View Healthcare Center in Tracy. He is the former owner of the Book Nook in New Ulm. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the City Cemetery in New Ulm. Visitation will be Thursday from noon until time of service at the funeral home. A complete obituary will appear in a later edition of The Journal. Cyril Iffert, 79 of Morgan died Tuesday, March 2, 1999 at the Sleepy Eye Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. parish rosary, at the Nelson Funeral Home in Morgan, and 8-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. He is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Hubert Iffert, Joe and Helen Iffert all of Morgan, Sy C. and Karen Iffert of Seattle, Wash., sisters and brother-in-law Frieda Wolfe, Mary Rider Anderson both of Minneapolis, Cleo Zeug of Redwood Falls, Odelia Eckhart, Therese and Clayton Anderson all of Willmar; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. He was born Sept. 26, 1919 in Leavenworth Township, Brown County to Joseph and Cleopha (Schulte) Iffert. he grew up on family farms in and around Sleepy Eye, Morgan, and Dehli, and attended St. Michael's elementary and Morgan high schools, graduating in 1939. He farmed until the 1960s when he moved to Minneapolis to work as a custodian for the Metropolitan Medical Center. He had resided at the Gil-Mor Manor Nursing Home in Morgan.
