Reuben Batalden , 87, of Lamberton, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Springfield Medical Center in Springfield. Service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 12, at Highwater Lutheran Church in rural Lamberton. Burial will be at Highwater Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Friday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Lamberton, and will continue at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday. He is survived by his wife Frances of Lamberton; his son Roger of Lamberton; three granddaughters; three great-grandchildren, and a sister Ethel Steffen of Lamberton. Reuben Matthew Batalden was born March 7, 1917, in Highwater Township, Cottonwood County, to Meyer and Hilda (Quam) Batalden. Irene Hokanson , 97, formerly of Winthrop, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center, in Stillwater. Arrangements are pending with the Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel, in Winthrop. Leslie Vernon Peterson , 90, of Springfield, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield. Funeral service is 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 12, at St. John Lutheran Home Chapel. Interment is Friday at the Springfield City Cemetery. Visitation is one hour before the service at the chapel Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home of Springfield. He is survived by sons, Ray Peterson of Butterfield, Harold Peterson of New Ulm; daughter, Arlene Harlow of Ash Flat, Ariz.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brother Fred Peterson of Mountain Lake; sisters, Gladys Russenberger of Sanborn, Ethel Thornblad of Slayton, and Hazel Fredin of Mountain Lake. Leslie 'Pete' Vernon Peterson was born Feb. 1, 1914 in Royal, Iowa, to Perry and Cora (Macabee) Peterson. Harland Walter , 85, of Hastings and formerly of Lafayette, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Augustana Health Care Center in Hastings, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 13 at First Lutheran Church in Lafayette with burial in the First Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to the time of service at the church on Saturday. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home of New Ulm is handling arrangements. Harland is survived by his wife Betty of the Augustana Health Care Center in Hastings; daughters and sons-in-law Colleen and Hubertus Sarrazin of Hastings and Nola Walter and Layton Traver of Hudson, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Alexus and his wife Krystyna Sarrazin of Racine, Wisconsin and Alicia Sarrazin of Hastings; brothers and sisters-in-law Clarence and Harriet Walter of Watertown, South Dakota and Leonard and Marie Walter of Clear Lake, South Dakota; and sisters and brothers-in-law Norma Koch of California, Grace and Ray Woods of Doland, South Dakota, and Leona and Bob Isenberg of St. Peter. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harvey. Harland was born June 14, 1918, in Duell County, South Dakota, to Hans and Meta (Beutler) Walter, the oldest of seven children. He joined the Air Corps in World War II, serving from 1942-1946 in El Paso, Texas. He worked at newspapers in Clear Lake, South Dakota; Madison, Minnesota; and Spencer, Iowa before moving to Mora where he and a partner operated a shopper-style newspaper. It was there that he met Betty Johnson. They were married on Thanksgiving Day 1948. Harland worked briefly in commercial printing in Milaca and was an advertising representative with a Mankato firm before Harland and Betty bought the Lafayette Ledger, publishing their first issue October 27, 1950. Although they sold the newspaper in 1979, Harland continued to help out at the newspaper until shortly before he and Betty moved to Hastings in April 2000 to be closer to their daughters as health issues arose. Harland lived on his own until moving to Augustana Health Care Center recently. During his years in Lafayette, Harland was active in many organizations. He was a charter member and first president of the Lafayette Area Lions Club and received the Melvin Jones Award from the Lions organization. He was a 50-year member of the Lafayette American Legion and was a member of the Lafayette Commercial/Community Club, Lafayette Industries, Masons, the Minnesota Newspaper Association and the Printers Guild. He helped organize the Lafayette Historical Society. The Walters were honored by Mayor Arden DeBoer at "Harland and Betty Walter Day in Lafayette" April 25, 2000, before they moved to Hastings.
