   Phyllis Wild, 79 of Fresno and formerly New Ulm, died March 5, 1999 at St. Agnes Hospital in Fresno.
   She was buried in the Clovis District Cemetery in Clovis, Calif.
   She is survived by husband, Dale Wild of Fresno; sister, Dee Besmehn of Salinas, Calif.; and brother Jack Simkins of New Ulm.
   She was born Oct. 2, 1919 in Neligh, Nebr., to Harley and Aileen Simkins. She attended New Ulm High School. Before her retirement she was the managing editor of St. Agnes Hospital Publications in public relations. She was a graduate of Fresno State University.

Elsie Peterson, 94, of Springfield died Monday, March 15, 1999, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
   Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield with burial in the church cemetery.
   Visitation is 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Friday at the church.
   Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield, is handling arrangements.
   She is survived by son, Richard and wife Sara Peterson of Eagan; several nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in 1942; sisters,Martha Krueger, Louis Sandman; and brothers, Edward and Otto Sandman.
   She was born Aug. 22, 1904, in Burnstown Township, Brown County, to Edward and Ernestina (Kettner) Sandman. She attended country school. She moved to Rochester to work. On Oct. 19, 1941 she married Harold Peterson in Rochester. Following her husband's death, she returned to Springfield. She had several cleaning jobs and worked at St. John Lutheran Home. She retired in 1978. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield.

   Otto William 'Bill' Klein, 63, of Sleepy Eye died Sunday, March 14, 1999, in Sleepy Eye.
   Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with burial in the church cemetery.
   Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30-9:30 a.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home. There will be a Christian Mothers rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 6:30 p.m., both at the funeral home today.
   He is survived by wife, Dorothy of Sleepy Eye; daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Dan Reddemann of Sleepy Eye, Jenny and Daryn Huiras of Sleepy Eye, Julie and Jon Guldan of Clive, Iowa; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Beth of Sleepy Eye, Jade and Lisa of Champlin, Jeremy of Sleepy Eye, Jeff of St. Paul; seven grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Glen Sliger of Santa Paula, Calif., Marian and Roger Sellner of Sleepy Eye, Virginia and Con Schroeder of Garland, Texas, Karen and John Huettl of Sleepy Eye, Diane Fischer of Bloomington; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger and Joanne of Sleepy Eye, Jerry and Cathy of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.
   Additional survivors include sister, Linda Brennan of Forest Lake; and sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Robert Paulson of Sleepy Eye.
   He was preceded in death by daughter, Janelle in infancy; and brother, James.
   He was born May 1, 1935, in Sleepy Eye to Otto and Dolores (Wagner) Klein. He attended school in Sleepy Eye. He served in the United States Marine Corps from October 1953 until October 1956. In July 956 he joined the Sleepy Eye Police Force and served for 27 1/2 years and was police chief for nearly 14 years. He married Dorothy Wurtzberger on Nov, 5, 1960 in New Ulm. During his career on the police force, he also served as the ambulance coordinator, and in January of 1986 he took over that position on a full-time basis until he retired in 1994. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye.

   Caroline Clarkson, 47, of St. James died Monday, March 15, 1999, at Immanuel-St. Joseph Hospice Unit in Mankato.
   Services are 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the Mount Hope Cemetery in St. James. Visitation is 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James on Thursday.
   She is survived by brother, Leslie "Art" Clarkson of Quincy, Ill.
   She was preceded in death by her parents.
   She was born Jan. 27, 1952 to Leslie W. and Virgie (Bornson) Clarkson at Quincy, Ill., where she was raised and educated. She moved to St. James in the early 1990s and worked a short time in New Ulm and did volunteer work. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.

   Esther F. Henning, 82, of Springfield died March 16, 1999 at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
   Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield with burial in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Springfield.
   Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today and 7:30-11 a.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.
   She is survived by daughter Jolene and husband Dale Danielson of Butterfield; son Roger and wife Debby Henning of Sharon, Wis.; grandchildren, Amy and Noel Danielson; sisters, Eva and husband Herb Jenson of Buffalo Center, Iowa, Edna Rositzke of Springfield, Betty DeJesus of Gary, Ind.; brother Ken and wife Marion Wollin of St. Peter; sisters-in-law Gretchen Wollin of Winner, S.D. and Louis Wollin of Waterloo, Iowa.
   She was preceded in death by husband, Elroy; sister Maw Schwarzock; brothers, Hank Westendorf, Alvin Westendorf; half-brothers Eddie Wollin, Marvin Wollin; and brother-in-law Vic Rositzke.
   She was born March 1, 1917, in Buffalo Center, Iowa, to Henry and Faldea (Behrends) Westendorf. As a child she moved to the Mountain Lake area with her family. On June 18, 1938 she married Elroy Henning at the St. Paul Lutheran Church parsonage in Springfield. The couple lived in Springfield. They purchased the Henning Cafe in 1944 and operated it until 1977. She became a resident at St. John Lutheran Home in 1994. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield.

   Leonard 'Stub' Bernardy, 77 ,of Seaforth died Sunday, March 14, 1999, near his home in Seaforth.
    Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Seaforth with burial in the church cemetery.
    Visitation is Friday from 4-8 p.m. and continues Saturday one hour prior to services at the church. There will be a parish prayer service Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the church.
   Arrangements were handled by Sunset Funeral Home, Echo.
   He is survived by brothers and sisters, Lawrence Bernardy, Mathilda Guetter and husband Alphonse, Geneveive Rohlik and husband George all of Wabasso, Norbert Bernardy and wife Lucy of Lucan, Adolph Bernardy and wife Lavonne of Wabasso, Marvin Bernardy and wife Maureen of Seaforth; many nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by a brother Isidore.
   He was born July 7, 1921 in Granite Rock Township, Redwood County, to John and Catherine (Manderscheid) Bernardy. He attended Lucan Public School. He worked in construction, as a mechanic, a blacksmith in Seaforth and farmed near Seaforth until retiring in 1982, when he moved to Seaforth. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Seaforth where he had served on the parish council, belonged to the Catholic Order of Foresters and served on the building committee. He received the Diocese Medal of Service and the Seaforth Softball Association appreciation award. He served on the Seaforth fire department for over 50 years, he belonged to the Seaforth Booster Club, and the 2 Cylinder Club.

   George A. Volz, 82, of 1224 5th North Street in New Ulm died Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at the Divine Providence Home in Sleepy Eye. He was the former president of the F & M Bank in New Ulm.
   Funeral arrangements are pending with Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.

   Herbert J. Dietl, 82, of 221 4th Ave. SW in Sleepy Eye and formerly of New Ulm died Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at the Sleepy Eye Hospital.
   Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye with burial in St. Raphael's Catholic Cemetery in Springfield.
   Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday and 7:30-10 a.m. Saturday at the former Minnesota Valley Funeral Home building at 521 West Main Street in Sleepy Eye.
   A parish prayer service will be at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home in Sleepy Eye.
   He is survived by his wife, Thelma Dietl of Sleepy Eye; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Dale Jensen of Searles; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Arlene Dietl of Sleepy Eye; stepson and daughter-in-law, Armin G. and Joy Vollmer of Tucson, Arizona; six grandchildren, Dawn Dietl of New Ulm, Chris Jensen of Granite Falls, Ronald Dietl Jr. of Mankato, Becki Dietl of New Ulm, Shelly Dietl and Renee Dietl both of Sleepy Eye; two great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Alice and John W. Evers of Springfield; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lester and Agnes Johnson, Leonard and Blanch Johnson both of St. Paul.
   He was preceded in death by his wife, Deloris Dietl in 1993; a son, Richard Dietl; and a sister, Arlene Schewe.
   He was born on March 3, 1917, in Sigel Township, Brown County to John and Ann (Schmidt) Dietl. He married Deloris Welsch on October 16, 1940 at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. They farmed in Paxton Township, Redwood County for 20 years and moved to Home Township, Brown County and farmed until retiring in 1982. They moved to New Ulm and lived there until Deloris died on April 7, 1993. He married Thelma Godfrey on August 24, 1994, and they lived in the New Ulm area until moving to Sleepy Eye in August of 1998. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye.

   Norman Machtemes, 75, of St. Paul, and formerly of New Ulm, died March 16, 1999, at his home.
   Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke's Catholic Church, 1079 Summit Ave. St. Paul, with burial in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
   Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Willerscheid Mortuary in St. Paul and one hour before services at the church Thursday.
   He was born Aug. 25, 1923, to Charles and Elizabeth Machtemes in New Ulm. His family was originally from the Swan Lake area. He married Odral Dahlin on Oct. 24, 1946, in Gibbon. He worked as a service manager at Whitaker Buick in St. Paul.
   He is survived by his wife, Odral; children, Tom and wife Bonnie Machtemes of St. Paul, Barb Wytowicz of St. Paul, Jim and wife Laura Machtemes of St. Paul; six grandchildren; brothers, Charles of Waconia, Francis of Franklin; sisters, Agatha Hank of St. Paul, and Patricia Segner of St. Bonifacius.
