Payne, New Ulm, died Monday, April 5, 1999, at New Ulm Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity with burial in the Catholic Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm veterans organizations. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. St. John's Court Catholic Order of Foresters will lead the rosary at 6:30 p.m., and there will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. A full obituary will appear in the next edition of The Journal. Joseph H. 'Joe' Portner, 70, 323 N. German Street in New Ulm died Saturday, April 3, 1999 at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Friday at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the Catholic Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by New Ulm veterans organizations. Visitation is 3 - 8 p.m. Thursday and will continue 7:30 -10:30 a.m. Friday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a combined rosary by St. John's Catholic Order of Foresters and St. Joseph Catholic Aid Society at 6:30 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. He is survived by his wife Rosadell "Rosie" Portner of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law Marlene and Tony Mailhot of Hastings; sons and daughters-in-law Mark and Carol Portner and Mike and Gigi Portner, all of New Ulm; granddaughter Claire Portner of New Ulm; mother-in-law, Viola Wendinger of New Ulm; sisters and brothers-in-law, Hildegard Saffert, and Donna and George Reiser all of New Ulm, Alyce and Melvin Klinkner of Stewart; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Roman and Arleta Portner and Donald and Gladys Portner all of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by daughter Mary Kay Portner in 1978; brother Norman Portner; father-in-law Ludwig Wendinger, and brother-in-law Ambrose Saffert. He was born March 5, 1929 in New Ulm to Herman and Hilda (Hamann) Portner. He served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955 and was stationed in Vermont and in Japan. He married Rosadell "Rosie" Wendinger on Oct. 20, 1955 at St. George Catholic Church in St. George. They lived in New Ulm. He worked at AMPI, General Trading, Klossner Co-op, the Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm as caretaker; and most recently he was employed at Brown County Fairgrounds. He was a member of Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the Catholic Cemetery board. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Order of Foresters, the St. Joseph Catholic Aid Society, and Veterans of Foreign Wars 1648 in New Ulm. He had been a past member of the board of directors for Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes. Karen Louise (Monson) Morris, 62, died March 31, 1999 in Tucson, Ariz. Services were April 5 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Shoreview, with burial in Incarnation Cemetery. She is survived by her husband Jack; daughter Kim Thompson and husband Nathan of Shoreview; sons and daughters-in-law, Nathan and Gaby, Jonathan and Ginny, and Jefferson and Marina, all of St. Paul; eight grandchildren; brother Dale Monson and wife Carol of Bernadotte; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Ray Sallstrom, and Lou and Bob Lind of Winthrop; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Jennings Mergenthal of Roseville. She was born Jan. 21, 1937 in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County, Minn. to Nemerd and Sigrid (Anderson) Monson. She graduated from Winthrop High School and attended Gustavus Adolphus College. She was a former member of Bernadotte Lutheran Church. She married Jack Morris on March 18, 1956. Francis C. Klinkner, 81, of Eagle Lake, formerly of Madelia, died Sunday, April 4, 1999 at Oaklawn Health Care Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Madelia, with burial in Calvary Cemetery in Madelia. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today at the Mankato Mortuary, with an 8 p.m. rosary. Visitation will continue one hour before the service Thursday at the church. The time of the service was reported incorrectly in The Journal on Tuesday.
