Minnesota in New Ulm died Thursday April 29, 1999 at Lafayette Good Samaritan Center in Lafayette. Arrangements are pending with Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. Dr. Paul Asleson, 79, of Redwood Falls, died on Wednesday, April 28, 1999 at Sunwood Good Samaritan Care Center in Redwood Falls. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls with military rites conducted by me American Legion, V.F.W. and National Guard units of Redwood Falls. Burial will be held at a later date in the church cemetery. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today with a parish prayer service at 7:30 pm at Nelson Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and continues on Saturday from 8-10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. He is survived by his wife Vergie of Redwood Falls; daughters; Betty Woelfel and husband Harlan of Seattle, Washington, Patricia Tersteeg and husband Jim of Redwood Falls, Minnesota and Debbie Walker and husband Lynn of St. Louis, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and a great grandson. He was preceded in death by two sisters Marie Fix and Rose Adele Carlson. He was born on June 26, 1919 in Redwood Falls to Albert and Marie (Jackson) Asleson. He graduated from Redwood Falls High School in 1937. He attended the University of Minnesota and graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago in 1946. He served in the United States Army from April 23, 1943 until Dec. 17, 1945 during World War II. On May 1, 1943 he married Vergie Trent in Redwood Falls. They lived in Redwood Falls where he practiced optometry for 50 years at Asleson Visual Clinic. He retired in 1982. He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls and was a catechism teacher. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Minnesota Optometric Association and the National Academy of Optometry. He was a former member of Rotary, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Redwood Falls Chamber of Commerce, Library Board, Police Commission and American Legion. He was mayor of Redwood Falls from 1971 until 1980. Chester W. Gustafson, 86, of Bird Island, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at Renville County Hospital, Olivia. Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Palmyra Covenant Church in rural Hector with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Saturday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home, Bird Island and continues one hour before services Sunday at the church.
