Mark J. Bierl , 64, of Wanda, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the V.A. Hospital in Minneapolis. Arrangements are pending with Sturm Funeral Home in Lamberton. Otis Loose , 83, of 805 S. Jefferson St., New Ulm, died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, at the First United Methodist Church in New Ulm, with Rev. Dean Nosek officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm veterans organizations will follow in the Soldiers Rest section of the New Ulm City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8: p.m. Monday and 7-8 a.m. Tuesday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm, and one hour prior to service at the church. Otis Arno Loose, the son of Arno and Erma (Pollei) Loose, was born July 10, 1920, in New Ulm. After graduating from New Ulm High School in 1937, Otis attended Macalester College in St. Paul for four years. He entered the United States Army Air Force in 1942 serving as a bomber pilot in the European Theater during World War II. Otis married Peggy Hammond March 12, 1943 in Fort Worth, TX. Following his honorable discharge, they made their home in New Ulm. Some years later, Otis and Hank Nicklasson entered into the sporting goods business together, with Otis eventually owning and operating The Sportsman's Shop. After being elected Brown County Auditor, Otis returned to college, earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Mankato State College in 1972. He served as Brown County Auditor and Administrator for many years, retiring in 1986. Otis was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in New Ulm, serving in many offices and in various capacities. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post #132 and VFW Post #1648 of New Ulm and was elected to the Macalester College Hall of Fame and the New Ulm Baseball Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife, Peggy; daughters, Ronda Hanten of New Ulm, Geribeth Loose of Mankato; sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Karen Loose of Savage, Timothy and Sue Loose of New Ulm; seven grandchildren, Amy Friedges, Tony Hanten, Rick, Sara, Emily, Rebecca and Adam Loose; six great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emma Hanten, Nicholas, Danielle and Matthew Friedges, and Myles Otis Loose; sister, Shirley Schneider of Mesa, AZ; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Eugene 'Gene' Schmid , 83, of 1014 1st North in New Ulm died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis. Funeral Service will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 26, at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldiers Rest Section. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm veterans organizations. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, and 7:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Wednesday. Gene is survived by his wife, Berneatta "Nita" Schmid of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and Ron Hacker of Sterling, Virginia, and Jackie and Tom Roesch of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Ellen Mueller of Saint Paul, Rod and Ginny Mueller of New Ulm, Dan and Laura Mueller of Minneapolis, Corey and Julie Schmid of Sauk Rapids, and Charles and Stephanie Schmid of North Mankato; seventeen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Schmid of Hutchinson; and a sister-in-law, Neoma Schmid of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a brother, Ethelbert Schmid. Eugene was born on May 10, 1921, in Sleepy Eye to William and Mary (Prokosch) Schmid. He farmed from 1951-1965 in Home Township, Brown County. On August 7, 1965, he married Berneatta Weber-Mueller at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. He was a self employed carpenter in New Ulm until retiring in 1984. He volunteered many hours at the Treasure Haus and the Lind House. Gene was a World War II Veteran receiving the purple heart, a member of the VFW, American Legion, DAV, and St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed his family and coffee buddies. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be given to the St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Cecelia 'Cele' Zieske , 91, formerly of rural Courtland, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with Father Edward J. Ardolf officiating. Burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, and from 7:30-9:30 a.m., Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. Cecelia is survived by her sisters and brother-in-law, Virginia and Eugene Griebel of Lafayette, and Marion Stevensen of Nicollet; and a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Rose Meurer of Nicollet. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin A. Zieske on April 25, 1984; and sisters Dorothy Anton, Grace Giefer, Lillian Wills, Gertrude Hoffmann, Beatrice Meurer and Anna Mae Larson. Cecelia Meurer was born on November 10, 1912, in Belgrade Township, Nicollet County, to Joseph and Anna (Meurer) Meurer. She graduated from Nicollet High School in 1931. On October 29, 1935, she married Marvin A. Zieske at St. Paul's Catholic Church, in Nicollet. After marriage they farmed in Courtland Township, Nicollet County and retired in 1981. In 1997 she moved to the Garden Terrace Apartments in New Ulm. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm.
