Mildred Irene (Hoffman) Bowers 82 ,of St. James, died on Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James, Services are 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 4, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in St. James with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Tuesday and 7:30-11:30 a.m., Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James . She is survived by sisters, Deloris Rich of St. James, and Eleanor Patterson of Glendale, Ariz. She was born on Sept. 29, 1920, in St. James, to Louis F. and Bertha (Dallinger) Hoffman. Flora (Bode) Cole , 56 of Payson, Arizona, formerly of Gil-Mor Manor Nursing Home, Morgan, Minn., died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Manzanita Nursing & Rehab Center in Payson, Arizona. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Fletcher's Mortuary in Show Low, Arizona. A memorial service for her family and friends that are not attending her funeral in Arizona will be held at Gil-Mor Manor Nursing Home in Morgan, Minn., on Friday June 6, at 9:30 a.m. Flora is survived by her husband Wayne Cole of Cibecue, AZ; daughter and son-in-law Carisa and Bill Perkins of Lenexa, KS; son and daughter-in-law Morey and Dena Cole of Carrizo, AZ, daughter and son-in-law Shauna and Joe Luera of Phoenix, AZ; daughter and son-in-law Dawn and Ryan Randolph of Cascade, CO; and son and daughter-in-law Daren and Tausha Cole of Payson, AZ.; six grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Gerald and Linda Bode of Mapleton, Nathan and Cheryl Bode of Courtland, Reverend Paul and Sue Bode of Henning, sister and brother-in-law Carol and Rick Harkins of Hamilton, Ind; brother and sister-in-law Reverend Arthur and Jody Bode of Engadine, MI, Mark Bode of New Ulm, Edward and Vicky Bode of New Ulm, and Martin and Deb Bode of Morgan. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one grandchild, Rose Cole who died shortly after birth. Flora was born on June 25 1946, at Union Hospital in New Ulm, Minn., to Wilmer and Marie (Gurgel) Bode. Flora grew up on a dairy farm in Courtland Township, Nicollet County. She was the oldest of nine children, she was a great help to her mother raising the younger children and also enjoyed being outside helping her dad, She was involved with 4-H and showing cattle at county and state fairs. She attended grade school at Immanuel Lutheran School in rural Courtland. She graduated from high school at Martin Luther Academy 1964 and graduated from Dr. Martin Luther College with a degree in teaching in 1969. She married Wayne Cole on June 7, 1969, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Courtland, Minn. Flora and her husband Wayne spent much of their married lives on a small Indian reservation in the upper elevation of Arizona, of Cibecue Ariz., as Lutheran Missionary Teachers and later, manager/bookkeeper of the local Trading Post. She played piano and organ, loved to sing and take long walks. Vernon Zahn , 82, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2003, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 6, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Northfield with the Rev. John E. Quam officiating. Music will be provided by Ruth Ferguson and Ruth Legvold. Interment will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery at 1:15 p.m., (assembly #4). Casket bearers will be Paul Dyste, Gerald Dyste, Eric Moe, Jeff Moe, Geoff Zahn and Andy Zahn. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, at Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield, and at St. John's Lutheran Church one hour prior to the funeral on Friday. Vernon Frederick Zahn was born September 11, 1920, in Bellingham, Minn., to George and Martha (Boehnke) Zahn. He was raised in Bellingham and graduated from Bellingham High School in 1938. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army. He married Hannah Marie Dyste in 1944 in Abilene, Texas. They lived in New Ulm for 31 years where Vern taught history, physical education, and was athletic director for many years. He also served as head baseball coach and as an assistant coach in basketball and football. In 1978, after his retirement, Vern and Marie moved to Haines City, Florida, and in 1994 they moved to Northfield. Marie passed away in December 2000. Vern was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Northfield Lions Club, and was the former president of the Home Owners Association at 1000 Cannon Valley Drive. During his teaching career he served as president of the Minnesota Athletic Directors Association and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota State High School League. Vern had a great sense of humor and he loved life and people. He was an avid bridge player and taught the game of bridge to many others. Survivors include his children: David and his wife Jenni of Chicago, Illinois; Roger and his wife Anne of Minnetonka Beach; and Janet and her husband Jeff Moe of Minneapolis; five grandchildren, Sarah McShane, Andrew, Geoffrey, and Elizabeth Zahn, and Eric Moe; his brother-in-law Ken Wilkins of Northfield; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his sister Aurelia Wilkins. .
