Michael "Dick" Kuelbs, 95, of the Countryside Apartments in Sleepy Eye died Friday, July 16, 2004 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 PM Monday, July 19, 2004 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye with burial in the Home Cemetery in Sleepy Eye. Father Brian Oestreich will officiate. Full graveside military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Visitation will be 1 - 2 PM Monday at the church. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Michael was born January 8, 1909 in Home Township, Brown County, the son of Michael and Cora (Case) Kuelbs. He married Luella Seifert on June 9 1937 in Estherville, Iowa, making their home in Sleepy Eye. He worked at Del Monte in Sleepy Eye before being drafted in 1944. After completing his basic training in Northwood, Texas he was shipped to France with the 645th Tank Destroyers Battalion. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged from the US Army in 1946 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. Michael and Luella moved to Los Angeles, California in 1946 where he worked with his brother-in-law Ervin Seifert in construction. Later he was employed by Safeway Foods in Santa Fe Springs, California for 28 years as a maintenance man until his retirement. They moved back to Minnesota in 1982 settling in New Ulm. They moved to Countryside Apartments in Sleepy Eye in 1998. Dick is survived by his wife, Luella of Sleepy Eye; brothers-in-law, Stanley Seifert and his wife Patt and Art Seifert and his wife Arlene, all of Sleepy Eye; sisters-in-law, Dolores Vickers of Gordonville, Texas; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ed, Oren, Robert, Albert, Elmer "Pudge", Leo and Alvin Kuelbs; a sister, Mazzola; brothers-in-law, Harvey, Ervin, and Sylvester Seifert; and a sister-in-law, Violet Barsness. Annabelle Malinda Smith, newborn infant daughter of Robb and Jayne Smith of rural Gibbon, was born on July 16, 2004 and joined the angels in heaven that same day. Christian burial will be 4:00 p.m. Monday, July 19th, 2004 at the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery with Father Edward J. Ardolf celebrating. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, New Ulm, is handling the arrangements. Annabelle is survived by her parents; sisters, Aubrie Smith, Amanda Tauer and her friend, Jason Havlik all of rural Gibbon; grandparents, Linda and Dennis Hull of Charles City, Iowa, Donald and Connie Richter of New Ulm, Linda and Craig Anderson of Courtland, and Chuck Smith of Lafayette; and by many aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by an infant sibling. Our rosebud never had time to open on earth. God chose her for HIS heavenly bouquet. Margaret Schumacher, 91, of Redwood Falls, died on Friday, July 16, 2004 at the Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls. Services are Tuesday, July 20 at 2:00 p.m. from Nelson-MartIn Funeral Service, with burial in the Redwood Falls Cemetery. There will be no visitation. She is survived by daughter, Sandra Whetston of Lake Lillian; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was born April 13,1913 in Wabasso, to George and Ione (Blake) Huling. Lorraine Thul, 84, of Sleepy Eye, died on Friday, July 16, 2004, in Mankato. Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A parish prayer service is 7 p.m. Monday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday and 7:30-9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. She is survived by her daughters, Joan Schimschock of Sleepy Eye, Phyllis Heinrich of Woodbury, Judy Olson of Ham Lake and Diane Case of Sleepy Eye, 12 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; brother, Gordon Thoms of Sleepy Eye, and sister, Muriel Urness of Arizona. She was born on April 23, 1920, in Richmond, to Edwin and Mae (Boggs) Thoms. Shirley Wallner, 69, of St. Paul and formerly of New Ulm died Saturday, July 17, 2004 in St. Paul. Arrangements are pending with the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
