He attended school in New Ulm and received training at the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture. He married Evelyn Semerud of Fairfax on June 4, 1940, and began farming near Bird Island. Believing that the farm economy would collapse after World War II, he took a job as manager of an oil cooperative in Essig in 1945. When his fear about the economy proved unfounded, he and Evelyn returned to farming outside of Fairfax in 1949. He had lived in the Fairfax area ever since.

He was a member of the Fairfax Board of Education for 15 years, serving as secretary for several years. His prowess as a farmer was recognized when he won the 1953 Renville County plowing contest.
Louis loved to travel. When the demands of farming permitted, he would pack the family into the car and take off to destinations around the Midwest. Later, he and Evelyn frequently visited the southwestern United States and Hawaii and made foreign trips as well. After Evelyn died in 1982, he traveled to Australia and New Zealand.
On Nov. 4, 1983, he married Lucille Lammers Rieke of Morgan -- she was formerly director of the Fairfax Nursing Home. The couple continued to travel frequently during their retirement.
