Elizabeth 'Betty' Bastian, 66, of rural New Ulm died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis. Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m.today and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. St. Mary's Catholic Aid Society will pray the rosary at 6:30 p.m. today, and there will be parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. She is survived by her husband, Stanley Bastian of rural New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Richard Allen of New Ulm, LaVonne and Alfred Hinderman Jr. of Glencoe, and Cindy Oliver of St. James; sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Kathleen Bastian of St. Paul, Thomas and Beth Bastian, James and Kathy Bastian, Dino Bastian and his friend Rosie Hauser, all of rural New Ulm, Peter Bastian, and Mark Bastian and his fiancee, Shelley, ll of New Ulm; 15 grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Iris and Charles Mathiowetz of Red Wing; and a brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Bernice Dietz of rural New Ulm. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was born June 26, 1934, in Pierz, to Alfred and Kathleen (Jutz) Dietz. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School in New Ulm. On May 4, 1955 she married Stanley Bastian at St. Mary's Catholic Church. They farmed in Cottonwood Township, Brown County, for 40 years. She worked as a nursing assistant at the Highland Manor Nursing Home and Oak Hills Living Center. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, a 50-year member of St. Mary's Catholic Aid Society, and the Council of Catholic Women Society all in New Ulm. Marshall Versaevel, 87, of New Ulm, formerly of Marshall, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000 at home. Services are 2 p.m. today at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Marshall, with burial in St. Clotilde Catholic Cemetery, Green Valley. Visitation was held Monday. Hamilton-Birk Funeral Home, Marshall, was in charge of arrangements. He is survived by children, Sandra and husband David Jacobsen of Sauk Rapids, Lou Ann and husband Kirk Smith of New Ulm, and Douglas and wife Linda of Claypool, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Frank and wife Rita, Bill and wife Clarice, and Oscar and wife Joan of Marshall; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; sister Emily Brosseau; brother, Raymond; and great-granddaughter, Kari Hennemann. He was born Nov. 20, 1912, in Marshall, to Leon and Eugenia (Vallaeys) Versaevel. He married Helen Dorothy Cromheecke on Nov. 22, 1939. They farmed in Vallers Township until 1976 when they retired. They moved to Marshall in 1985. His wife died March 25, 1995. He moved to Ridgeway on German in New Ulm on Dec. 1, 1999. He was a former member of St. Clotilde Catholic Church, Green Valley. He was a member of Farmers Union, president of the Jolly Mixers Polka Club, and a member of Marshall Area Senior Center board. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Marshall. Hildegard M. Kuck, 87, of Searles died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Searles with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30-9:30 a.m. on Thursday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a rosary by the St. Elizabeth Catholic Aid Society at 6:30 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Norbert Ubl of rural New Ulm; son, Patrick Kuck of Arlington; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Shirley Kuck of rural Hanska; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Marie Schmidt of New Ulm; and brother and sister-in-law, Werner and Adelia Reinhart of rural New Ulm. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George, on Sept. 10, 1994; sister and brother-in-law, Quidella and John Kuck; and brother-in-law, Leander Schmidt. She was born Dec. 25, 1912, in St. George, to Hubert and Isabella (Huelskamp) Reinhart. She married George Kuck on Aug. 26, 1930, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Searles. They farmed in the New Ulm area until 1977 when they retired and moved to Searles. In January 199, she moved to Ridgeway on German in New Ulm. In April she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Lafayette. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Christian Mothers Society and St. Elizabeth Catholic Aid Society in Searles. James Lorenz, 54, of Mankato, formerly of St. James, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at Immanuel-St. Joseph Hospital, Mankato. Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home, St. James, with burial in East Sveadahl Lutheran Cemetery, St. James. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home, St. James. He is survived by fiancee, Judy Murilla of Mankato; daughter, Sheri and husband Brad Thorn of Mankato; sons, Duane and wife Kim of Mankato, and Matthew and wife Veronica of Chicago, Ill; three grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was born March 21, 1946, in St. James, to Walter and Marquerite (Ostberg) Lorenz. He graduated from St. James High School in 1964. He farmed on the family place before buying his own farm in Nelson Township. He retired from farming in 1978. In 1981 he moved to Mankato while still maintaining the farm. Maude L. Lager, 97, of Winthrop, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at Arlington Municipal Hospital. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Bernadotte Lutheran Church, Nicollet County, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to services Thursday at the church. Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel, Winthrop, is in charge of arrangements.
