Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church in Winthrop with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted by the Winthrop Honor Guard. Visitation is 4 - 8 p.m. today at Peace Lutheran Church in Winthrop and continues for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Thursday. The family prefers memorials to the donor's choice in lieu of flowers. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home of New Ulm is in charge of arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Steinhaus of rural Winthrop; daughters, Kathryn Mary Steinhaus Drake and husband, Dr. Thomas Drake of Longmont, Colo., Susan Kay Steinhaus Drake and husband, Richard Drake of Pratt, Kan., Jane Helen Klement and Husband, Rick Klement of Gibbon; sons, Michael Armin Steinhaus of St. Peter, Kenneth Lloyd Steinhaus and wife, Carolyn of Good Thunder, Charles James Steinhaus and wife, Karen of Brooklyn Center; David Bryan Steinhaus and wife, Grace of Glasgow, Ky.; 21 grandchildren; sister, Florence Emma Forbrook and husband, William of Morgan; and brother, Eldon Edward Steinhaus and wife, Delene of Morgan; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was born on June 10, 1924, in Three Lakes Township, Redwood County, to Oscar Emil and Bertha Martha (Jannusch) Steinhaus. He joined the Navy in 1945 and returned home in 1946. He served as a motor machinist mate on the fuel tanker the U.S.S. Mattaponi in the Pacific. He was also a member of the Blue Jacket Navel Choir and sang at the funeral of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He married Mary Braunreiter on Oct. 25, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran parsonage in Morgan. They farmed in rural Morgan for two years. They then moved to Bismarck Township, Sibley County in September of 1951 and farmed. In March of 1963 he became postmaster in Winthrop. He later served as postmaster in Green Isle and Madelia. He retired in 1988. He was active in numerous organizations such as Winthrop Ambulance, Winthrop School Board, Lions Club, Farmers Union of Sibley County, Region 9 Arts Council, Sibley County Planning and Zoning Board, NARFE - Chapter 1444, and he was an original board member of Winthrop Medical Clinic in Winthrop. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Winthrop and had served was a past president and council member as well as a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the American Legion Post 314 in Winthrop and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.) Post 4078 in Winthrop. Ruth Maurer, 81, a resident at Sleepy Eye Care Center and formerly of Buffalo Lake, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at the Care Center. Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's Catholic Church in Hector with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hughes Funeral Home in Hector and continues at the funeral home 8 a.m. Friday until the time of the service. She is survived by daughters, Louise Vath and husband Eldon of New Ulm, Carol Marie Talbot and husband Clarence of Ham Lake; son, Steven Maurer and wife Olga of Bella Vista, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; 25 grandchildren; brother-in-law, Edward Weis Sr. of Bird Island; sisters-in-law, Merle Maurer of Rosemount, Mary Haney of Crystal, Katie Kopacek of Olivia; nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John J. Maurer on Nov. 19, 1986; daughter, Delores Veigel; grandson, Timmothy Veigel; brother, Albert Redman; sister-in-law, Ann Weis, brothers-in-law, George Kopacek, Joseph Maurer and Gordon Haney. She was born March 11, 1918, in rural Brownton, Penn Township, Sibley County, to Frank and Martha (Wendtland) Harry. Her mother died when she was six weeks old, and she then lived with her maternal aunt Alvina and uncle Gustof Redman, who adopted her on Nov. 22, 1918. She grew up in Buffalo Lake and attended school. She married John J. Maurer on June 19, 1934 at St. John's Catholic Church in Hector. The couple lived in Hector for nine months when they moved to Buffalo Lake She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 30. She entered a New Ulm nursing home in June of 1983. She and and her husband entered the Sleepy Eye Care Center on Nov. 16, 1983. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. Calvin D. Hotovec, 47, of Fairfax, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999 at home. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel, Fairfax, with burial in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Cairo Township, Renville County. Visitation is one hour prior to services today at the funeral chapel. He is survived by his wife Pam; sons, Corey and wife Heather of Nicollet, Joel and fiancee Kelly Maurer of Lafayette and Jerry of Fairfax; grandchildren, Kendra and Arron of Nicollet; mother, Helen Hotovec Beckendorf of Redwood Falls; father Lester Hotovec of Delhi; and sister, Leann of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. He was born Nov. 22, 1951, in New Ulm, to Lester and Helen (Rasmussen) Hotovec. He grew up in the Redwood Falls area and later moved to Fairfax, where he graduated from Fairfax High School in 1969. He married Pam Firle on Oct. 29, 1968, in Spencer, Iowa. After their marriage, they resided in in Fairfax. He worked at various jobs during his lifetime. He was most recently employed by Tom Palmer Farms of Fairfax. Glenn A. Ruby, 84, of 1315 S. Washington, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999 at New Ulm Medical Center. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in the Soldiers' Rest section, of City Cemetery, New Ulm. There will be no reviewal or visitation.
