Paul W. Nass, 86, of Jefferson, Wis., died on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at Countryside Nursing Home in Jefferson.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jefferson, with burial with military rites in Christberg Cemetery in Jefferson.
Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Olsen Funeral Home in Jefferson and from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church Saturday.
Memorials may be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Martin Luther College or the WELS Church Extension Fund.
He is survived by two sons, Douglas (Paula) Nass of Racine, Wis., and Prof. Thomas (Janice) Nass of New Ulm; three grandsons; and two granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Jefferson, Wis., to Henry and Lydia (Langholff) Nass.
He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1933. Upon his graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in June 1938, he immediately started work as a municipal auditor for the State of Wisconsin. With the exception of military service during World War II, the traveled extensively throughout Wisconsin as a municipal auditor until his retirement in June 1982. He received his CPA certificate from the Wisconsin Board of Accountancy in 1941. He was a member of the Wisconsin Institute of CPA's, the American Institute of CPA's and the Association of Government Accountants.
He married Lorraine Schultz of Jefferson on Oct. 20, 1951 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Jefferson. She died July 16, 1977.
He was a lifelong member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jefferson. He was a church council member and financial secretary for many years. He was also active in choir, Luther Union, Men's Club, stewardship board and Reaching Out Committee. He was secretary of the Area Lutheran Chapel of the Air Association for many years.
During World War II he served 26 months in the finance office of the 94th Infantry Division. The last eleven months of his military service were spent at the Jeffersonville, Ind. Quartermaster Depot in various positions, the last of which was as a contracts termination negotiator after V-J Day.
He was a member of Reinhardt-Windl American Legion Post 164 of Jefferson. He was a charter member of the Jefferson American Legion Band, which was organized in 1930 and played regularly with them in the 1930's until his travels as a state auditor interfered. He rejoined the band in 1988 and played regularly through 1995. While at the University of Wisconsin he was a member of the concert and marching bands under Prof. Ray Dvorak for three years and was a member of the men's glee club and the University Singers, each for one year.
He was a member of the Wisconsin State Historical, Genealogical and Old Cemetery Societies, the Dodge-Jefferson County Genealogical Society and SABR. He was a member of the WELS Historical Institute and served as treasurer for over six years.
John 0. Kenning, 96, formerly of 814 Center St. in New Ulm, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001 at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday and 7 - 11 a.m. Monday at the Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm, and one hour prior to services at the church.
He is survived by his wife Helen, a resident of Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Marie and George Brandel of New Ulm, Helen Mae and Lynn Olson of New Ulm, Ramona and Ed Danhouser of Hutchinson, KS; son and daughter-in-law, Elray "Bud" and Phyllis of Mankato; seventeen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Elvira Kenning of Hackensack, Marie Kenning of Bird Island, and Emmy Mueller of New Ulm; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by eleven brothers and sisters, six half brothers and sisters, and an infant grandson.
He was born Dec. 25, 1904, near Bird Island, Osceola Township, Renville County, to Charles and Louise (Ehrenberg) Kerming. He married Helen Unverworn on Sept. 8,1932, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. They farmed in Brighton Township, Nicollet County for many years, moving to New Ulm in 1963. He worked for Case Implement and
also did custom combining for Gene Griebel. He moved to Real Life Apartments in 1995 and to Oak Hills Living Center in July 2001.
He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, a former member of the Brighton Township Board, and a former member of the District 59 Brighton Township School Board.
