State unemployment rate drops to 4.5 percent in March

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia's unemployment rate fell eight-tenths of a percentage point in March to 4.5 percent to give the state another record low for the year, Workforce West Virginia announced Monday.

The rate marked the third straight month that the state had posted a new monthly low.

For March, there were 766,800 people working and 36,400 unemployed, the agency said.

Goods and service sectors generated 5,900 jobs during the period, with construction leading with 1,700 jobs, followed by 1,600 seasonal jobs in state and local education. Other gains were recorded in leisure, trade, transportation and utility sectors.

Over the past year, the state's economy has added 9,600 jobs, with West Virginia's service sector providing 6,400 new jobs, the agency reported.

The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped two-tenths of a percentage point in March to 3.9 percent, the lowest seasonally adjusted March rate on record. It also was the second lowest seasonally adjusted rate on record.

The national unemployment rate for March was 4.7 percent, down one-tenth of a percentage point.
